Bondi beach hero Ahmed al Ahmed was acknowledged as part of a tribute in Sydney before the final Ashes test began. Among them were intensive care paramedics, doctors from Royal Prince Alfred and St Vincent's hospitals, lifesavers and local police, several of whom assisted while off duty. Star Australian players Alex Carey and Cameron Green applauded Ahmed and Dadon as they walked by, clearly aware Sunday's biggest heroes weren't those in cricket whites. "Thank you everybody, thank you for sharing our gratitude for the incredible service that these individuals and many others provided," the ground announcer said as applause rang out around the stadium. After both anthems, Ahmed, Dadon and the first responders were greeted by New South Wales' Sports minister Steve Kamper and Cricket Australia boss Todd Greenberg.

All up, 120mm fell in the 24 hours from 7am Saturday. “Rain starts to feel heavy when it’s more than 5mm an hour so to have 66mm in two hours is absolutely torrential,” Lyons said. “This sort of flooding has happened before, but if we keep getting weather events like this we need to look at what we can do to prevent it. Lyons said the weather would get considerably more settled heading into Monday, with sunny skies likely and some passing cloud. Lyons said the chance of thunderstorms reoccurring this week was looking very unlikely with the prevailing weather pattern.

Photo: Action Images via ReutersEngland's Luke Littler has thrashed Dutchman Gian van Veen to win the PDC World Darts title for the second successive year in front of a raucous Alexandra Palace crowd. The 18-year-old dropped the first set in the best-of-13-set showdown in London but hit back to stamp his authority on Van Veen, who had no answer to Littler's relentless scoring on Saturday. The 23-year-old Van Veen beat Anderson to reach his first world championship final and initially looked dangerous. Having come from behind in the first set to take it after Littler missed a double, Van Veen then went 2-0 ahead in the second set with checkouts of 145 and 127. Van Veen narrowly missed a 127 checkout that would have given him a two-set lead and that proved the turning point as his dream of emulating former Dutch champions Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld evaporated.

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters. Photo: ODT filesForeign Minister Winston Peters has made the government's first statement following the US military action against Venezuela, saying New Zealand is "concerned". "New Zealand is concerned by and actively monitoring developments in Venezuela and expects all parties to act in accordance with international law," Peters said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), using the official Minister of Foreign Affairs account. The military action comes after months of accusations from the Trump administration that Venezuela has been shipping narcotics into the US, but Trump has made no secret of his desire to access Venezuela's natural reserves. In theory, Gillespie said it appeared the US military action was unlawful.

One aspect that became clearer was the White House’s motivation, with Trump indicating regime change and Venezuela’s oil riches were the major goals. Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro onboard the USS Iwo Jima after the US military captured him, according to US President Donald Trump. Smoke billowing over Caracas after a series of explosions as part of a US military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Madruo. Maduro – in power since 2013 after taking over from leftist mentor Hugo Chavez – long accused Trump of seeking regime change in order to control Venezuela’s oil reserves. Trump has offered several justifications for the aggressive policy towards Venezuela, at times stressing illegal migration, narcotics-trafficking and the country’s oil industry.

If you are in Auckland or Wellington, the current property market slump is one of the worst in New Zealand’s history. The REINZ house price index, which came out on Thursday, fell by 0.5% in seasonally adjusted terms in July. A decade ago, when house price rises were in overdrive, the RBNZ ran stress tests that looked at the impact of house price falls of both 20% and 30% on the banking system. We are clearly, as the RBNZ and many others (including myself) warned, overly reliant on the property market to bolster our economic growth. The idea of an extended property sector downturn that helps revitalise the productive is nice in theory.
