As Kiwis woke to what looks to be a new National-ACT government on Sunday morning, news of the landslide election result was starting to filter around the world. England’s Sunday Times devoted all of five paragraphs to the result, also introducing the PM-in-waiting as the former Air NZ chief executive. “The search term Toni skyrocketed on Saturday night with hundreds of people trying to find out exactly who Toni is. “The search for Tony also went through the roof, with Kiwis apparently wondering if their PM had found love with a man.”

For several hours around that time, people lucky enough to be in a narrow 200km-wide corridor crossing North, Central, and South America get to experience an annular eclipse of the sun. While we won’t have a front-row seat to this particular eclipse, weather permitting, the next few evenings offer southern stargazers excellent opportunities to spot the very young moon.
