National leader Christopher Luxon (left) and Act leader David Seymour are on track to form the new Government. Mark Lister, investment director at Craigs Investment Partners, said business confidence had already started to lift heading into the election. With NZ First involved, most businesses would still see that as better than the status quo. But they would be happier again if it was cleaner and just the two parties rather than three,” Lister said. “National and Act will both be quite keen to reduce spending, particularly the spending they see as wasteful.

As Kiwis woke to what looks to be a new National-ACT government on Sunday morning, news of the landslide election result was starting to filter around the world. STUFF A few snippets of what Winston Peters said to media during a press conference in Russell the morning after the election. England’s Sunday Times devoted all of five paragraphs to the result, also introducing the PM-in-waiting as the former Air NZ chief executive. “The search term Toni skyrocketed on Saturday night with hundreds of people trying to find out exactly who Toni is. “The search for Tony also went through the roof, with Kiwis apparently wondering if their PM had found love with a man.”

The red tide of 2020 has been reversed, sweeping away seats Labour has held for decades including the "red wall" of Auckland seats that have gone to National. National could lose or gain a seat, but whatever the final count is the majority will still be uncomfortably small. With the exception of Labour, which has taken a thrashing, all the parties had something to celebrate. ACT's big success was deputy leader Brooke van Velden taking the previously safe National seat of Tamaki from Simon O'Connor. It previously held just one electorate seat, and has taken three from Labour.

The 'headline' CPI figure is made up of 'tradable' inflation imported from overseas (think fuel, for example) and 'non-tradable' domestically-generated inflation. So, it is the domestic inflation that is vitally important - and that's what's looked particularly problematic of late. According to the June 2023 CPI figures, at that time our 'non-tradable', domestic inflation annual rate was 6.6%, while the 'tradable', imported inflation was 5.2%. In fact our annual rate of domestic inflation has now been at 6.3% or higher for five whole consecutive quarters. Is it really all just about the domestic inflation figure though?

For several hours around that time, people lucky enough to be in a narrow 200km-wide corridor crossing North, Central, and South America get to experience an annular eclipse of the sun. Sometimes called a "ring of fire" eclipse, this event happens when the moon moves directly in front of the sun as seen from Earth. Instead, during the maximum phase of the eclipse, the lunar disk is surrounded by a ring of light, making for one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles. Unfortunately, tomorrow’s eclipse is invisible from New Zealand; the next eclipse visible from our world is a partial one on the morning of September 21, 2025, when more than 70% of the solar surface will be covered by the moon, as seen from Dunedin. While we won’t have a front-row seat to this particular eclipse, weather permitting, the next few evenings offer southern stargazers excellent opportunities to spot the very young moon.

Not so devastating for the left generally, well done to both Te Pāti Māori and the Greens on increasing the left vote. TVNZ’s coverage of this last night was all a bit FPP, with a nod to vote splitting, and John Campbell shouting from the side ‘but look at the Greens!’ Menendez got the Greens 23% of the party vote in Mt Albert. Likewise the Greens’ court jester candidate in Dunedin, Francisco Hernandez’s team ran a strong campaign, with the Greens getting 26% of the party vote there. The Greens have long campaigned in electorates they cannot win because it raises their party vote.
