In January 2023, the Kaitake lost power inside Cook Strait while it had 880 people on board. In 2013 the Aratere had one of its propellers simply fall off. And yesterday the steering on the Aratere failed about 15 minutes after it had set off from Picton. Fund managers say data centres have become “red hot”, especially since innovations like artificial intelligence put them in greater demand. This week, NZX-listed infrastructure investor Infratil easily raised $1 billion for expansion in data centres, specifically CDC, which has facilities in New Zealand and Australia. A data centre generally has a high electricity demand relative to other connections on the network.

The worker who was told to work on a seasonal visa spoke to Stuff on condition of anonymity. The job change meant his sponsored work visa lapsed. While he waited for another sponsored visa, the worker secured a seasonal work visa, which limited him to working in horticulture and viticulture. Hoff-Nielsen had not responded to requests for comment before deadline but previously told Stuff the worker's ERA claim was without merit.

Manufacturing and hospitality jobs were the second and third hardest hit, dropping 35.6% and 35.4% respectively. Interest.co.nz asked recruiter Robert Half what is going on, and the company's director Ronil Singh provided some answers for us. "The main reason why IT job ads have dropped the most is because we are coming off an IT jobs boom," Singh said. There is also the spectre of the much hyped artificial intelligence (AI) technology which is said to be able to replace some IT jobs, but hasn't had much of an impact on the IT jobs market, Robert Half noted. On average, salaries have increased a mere 0.6%, with only infrastructure and engineering workers getting an inflation-busting 9.5% pay rise.
