Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, Wednesday decried the exclusion of Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) in governance, assuring them of equal opportunity and all-inclusive governance in the state. Otti stated this during the Abia State Disability Day Celebration/Interactive Session held in Umuahia, lamenting the exclusion of the people from playing active and leadership roles in the political and social life in Nigeria. The Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group, Dr Umaru Kwairanga, has disclosed that two companies in the Dangote Industries Group will be listed on the exchange soon. Kwairanga made this revelation on Tuesday during a closing-gong ceremony in honour of the Senate Committee on Capital Market and Institution’s visit to the NGX headquarters in Lagos. He said, “As at last week, the president of Dangote assured me that the Dangote Refinery is going to be listed on this market very soon. He also said that apart from the refinery, he is going to list the fertiliser company (Dangote Fertiliser Limited). In his comments, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Market & Institutions, Senator Osita Izunaso, stated that the legislative arm of the government would be advising the executive to encourage companies in the energy value chain to list on the capital market.

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has announced plans by his administration to cultivate 150,000 hectares of wheat next farming season. The governor, who spoke in Dutse, the state capital, on Wednesday, when he received the Africa Development Bank delegation, disclosed plans to expand the programme to other crops in 2025. The Federal Government had allocated 40,000 hectares of land for wheat farming to Jigawa State under the initiative to enhance food security in Nigeria where over 10,000 farmers are supported with agricultural inputs for effective farming. Fregnen said the National Agricultural Development Scheme will be supported in the areas of irrigated land, farmers’ financing and the provision of opportunities for the young people for the development of the region. Other key stakeholders appreciated the support and commitments of the Jigawa State Government and assured a willingness to maintain the cordial relationship between the two parties.

The World Bank’s latest Food Security Update report released on Tuesday says inflation in food prices remains high globally across low, middle, and high-income countries. The report highlighted that in 63.2 percent of low-income countries, inflation exceeded 5 percent indicating a 1.3 percentage points increase from the previous food update of January 17, 2023. However, the Bank said in high-income countries food inflation surpassed 5 percent in 44.4 percent of nations, marking a decrease of 1.9 percentage points from the previous food update. According to the report, in 71 percent of the 165 countries with available data, food price inflation outpaced overall inflation in real terms. The World Bank’s Food Security Update stated that the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) reports that recent assaults by Houthi rebels on vessels in the Red Sea have led to a 40 percent reduction in trade volumes through the Suez Canal, thereby reducing global food security.
