Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday said that former chief justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar led the “gang of conspirators” against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif. The next prime minister will be Nawaz Sharif. “Imran Niazi was made the prime minister through rigged polls, with malfunctioning of RTS and the PML-N was deprived of its seats”, he added. The prime minister sneered that contrary to PTI chief’s tall claims for a vast network of public welfare projects, nothing tangible could be witnessed. The prime minister said if the people gave mandate to the PML-N in the next general elections, Nawaz Sharif would be the prime minister and under his guidance, he would work as an ordinary worker.

He recalled that Imran Niazi did not buy gas from the international market at the rate of three dollars, and the negligence added to the economic difficulties of the people. KARACHI - A young man was shot dead and a teenager wounded when two groups of drug peddlers clashed with each other in the Old Golimar area, police said. Pak Colony SHO Abdul Khaliq Ansari said that the clash took place between the two groups at Shaitan Chowk, as a result of which, two persons, identified as Uzair, 27, and Anas Javed, 18, were shot at and injured. They were shifted to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital where Uzair died during treatment. The SHO said the incident was an outcome of fighting between two criminal gangs involved in drug peddling in the area and that the deceased victim was also a ‘criminal.’ He said contingents of the police had rushed to the spot after receiving information about the fighting and ‘some arrests’ had also been made.

— AFP/FileISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Saturday received the federal government's nod for a massive hike of up to Rs7.50 per unit in the base tariff of electricity against the national average tariff determination of Rs4.96. Sources said that the federal cabinet gave the approval via circulation summary after which a request was submitted to the national power regulator. The hike is set to come into force from July 1 after formal notification by the Nepra following a public hearing. According to a Nepra statement, the revised national average tariff for the 2023-24 fiscal year has been determined at Rs29.78 per unit kWh, which is Rs.4.96 per unit higher than the previously determined national average tariff of Rs24.82. However, the applicable tariff would be much higher after including surcharges, taxes, duties and levies, besides monthly and quarterly adjustments.

Based on UNICEF data, approximately 22.8 million children aged 5-16 in Pakistan do not attend school, accounting for 44 percent of the population in this age range.
