This principle is not just a matter of judicial prerogative; it is the bedrock of a robust democratic system. This, in turn, could erode public trust in the legal system, threatening the very foundation of justice in Pakistan. While checks and balances are crucial to a functioning democracy, the government must exercise caution when attempting to curtail the judiciary’s authority. It is essential to remember that the judiciary’s autonomy is not an encroachment on parliamentary authority but rather a safeguard against potential abuses of power. We must not forget that the strength of our legal system lies in its ability to uphold justice impartially, transcending the shifting tides of political power.

Transparency and oversight should be the cornerstones of any privatisation process. Public offerings can act as checks and balances, ensuring that the privatisation process remains fair and equitable. However, past privatisation attempts have been hindered by various challenges, including economic volatility, judicial activism, litigation, and political resistance. Rebuilding this trust is imperative for successful privatisation efforts. The key to a successful privatisation process lies in procedural and process transparency.

New government data says that despite the rupee recovering significantly against the dollar, inflation actually went up, rising past 30% again. Annual inflation rose to 31.4% in September against 27.4% in August, and was up by 2% month-on-month in September, compared to 1.7% in August. Given that petroleum products — which are almost entirely imported — have a massive impact on inflation, a successful crackdown could have very quick results. A large chunk of inflation earlier this year was also attributed to the tough IMF conditions. Currently at record highs to help check inflation, the high rate also discourages investment, which is critically needed to meet broader economic goals.
