COLOMBO (News 1st); The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has airlifted emergency medical supplies to Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to help save lives, stop the spread of COVID-19, and continue to meet the urgent health needs across South Asia. This new airlift follows three shipments of COVID-19 relief supplies by the U.S. Government to Nepal and the delivery of seven emergency air shipments to India to help contain the COVID-19 pandemic. In Sri Lanka, this assistance includes 880,000 vital pieces of personal protective equipment and 1,200 pulse oximeters to support frontline healthcare workers and others most affected by the current outbreak. The U.S. Government has previously provided $11.3 million to assist Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 response and recovery, including a donation of 200 ventilators to care for critically ill patients. USAID is also working closely with the private sector to help address the immediate health needs in the region.

Authorities in Sri Lanka were trying to head off a potential environmental disaster Thursday as a fire-damaged container ship that had been carrying chemicals was sinking off of the country’s main port. The Singapore-flagged MV X-Press Pearl started sinking Wednesday, a day after authorities extinguished the fire that raged on the vessel for 12 days. There are “no reports of oil pollution” at the site of the shipwreck as of 7 a.m. Sri Lankan time, according to the statement. Sri Lanka navy spokesman Indika de Silva said the navy and coast guard were preparing for an oil spill with assistance from neighboring India. A team of Sri Lanka Navy divers is currently deployed to inspect for any oil spills from the fire-ravaged ship.

A special search operation carried out by the Navy in the lagoon area of Wattakkalliya, Chilaw yesterday (02) made way for the seizure of 362.95kg of dried turmeric and 571.4kg of big onion seeds which were to be smuggled into the country. A search of these sacks led to the discovery of the quantities of turmeric and big onion seeds. Accordingly, the dinghies used to transfer these consignments and 04 suspects in connection to the illegal act were taken into custody. Meanwhile, 02 other persons who arrived at the location to transport the smuggled consignment were also arrested. These 06 individuals, together with the seized turmeric and big onion seeds, 02 dinghies and the lorry were handed over to the Chilaw Police for onward legal action.

A National Environmental Policy is being Constitutionally drafted under the leadership of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Dr. Anil Jasinghe said today (03). He stated that this policy hopes to solve practical problems faced by Sri Lanka in relation to its ecosystems and wildlife. “The policy will outline environmentally sensitive areas which will be scientifically composed by taking into account the topography, geography, species, and other specifics of such areas that need special attention,” he said. These statements were made at a special media briefing held today at the Ministry of Environment. Dr. Jasinghe also added that the exercise will be malleable to each locale in an effort to maintain and enhance biodiversity.

Colonel Denis I.
