Unsurprisingly, the administration’s actions are having ripple effects for higher education, business (among companies who supply scientific products, for instance), and public health. At NOAA, these upheavals included the proposal to eliminate the agency’s primary research arm (the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research) as well as funding for climate research facilities and grants. It reshaped department advisory boards, for example, such as those focused on education science and the accreditation of higher education institutions. House and Senate versions of the budget include substantially higher funding for science than was included in Trump’s budget request, but specific allocations remain unknown. —Eos (@eos.org)Citation: AGU (2026), The state of the science 1 year on: Academia, Eos, 107, https://doi.org/10.1029/2026EO260005.

Moscow has revoked the accreditation of a British diplomat at the U.K. Embassy and ordered the individual to leave the Russian Federation within 14 days, announcing that a counterintelligence operation by the Federal Security Service (FSB) found him to be an undeclared officer of British intelligence. The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the United Kingdom’s senior on‑site diplomat in Moscow to lodge a formal protest and warned that further escalation by London could draw a reciprocal response. The British Foreign Office dismissed the espionage allegation as malicious and baseless and said it was carefully considering how to respond. The FSB announcement and Foreign Ministry statements provided the identification and accusation but did not publish supporting evidence, and no independent public documentation has been released to substantiate the espionage claim. Reporting also varied on precise name spelling and the exact diplomatic title of the U.K. official summoned.

The hearing, convened Jan. 14 and continuing into Jan. 15, combined technical questioning about investigative timelines with broader Republican arguments that seek to reshape public understanding of the Jan. 6 riot. The session drew high-profile supporters of Jan. 6 defendants; militant Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was reported to have sat in the front row. The new hearings come after House Republicans, having retaken the majority, reconstituted an investigative subcommittee to reexamine Jan. 6, and follow legal developments that have reshaped enforcement outcomes. That backdrop gives the GOP effort both legal and political salience as it seeks to question prior findings and to influence public impressions. The committee has signaled it will hold a series of public hearings over roughly the next three weeks, including sessions scheduled for primetime to maximize reach.

Guest Commentary written by Joshua Hernandez Joshua Hernandez is an English teacher and academic decathlon coach at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower. On a recent trip to the Inglewood Park Cemetery to visit my best friend Mike, I noticed that his tombstone was dirty. St. John Chrysostom was less than two miles from Beulah Payne but it felt like another universe, one where I was convinced I wouldn’t fit in. The summer of seventh grade, Mike left St. John and joined a gang—and I made the painful decision to distance myself from him. The last time I saw Mike was at the St. John fall carnival in 2019.

It was a reflection of a larger, well-documented problem: Black children are routinely perceived as older than they actually are. This phenomenon has a name: adultification bias. The expectation that Black children should shoulder adult responsibilities — and be held to adult standards their white peers are not — is deeply rooted and widely normalized. When Black children are viewed as older, their behavior is more likely to be criminalized rather than corrected.
