The federal government likely won’t reopen until at least Tuesday, when the House is expected to hold critical votes on a must-pass funding package, as Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries warns Republicans they can’t rely on Democrats. All Democrats are expected to vote against it, and Johnson can’t afford to lose more than a handful of GOP votes. Many Democrats say DHS shouldn’t receive the two weeks of funding — and Jeffries appears to be siding with them, raising the possibility that the shutdown could extend further into next week. House Democrats will hold a caucus call at 5 p.m. Jeffries told MS NOW in an interview Saturday that House and Senate Democrats are on the same page in regard to their demands for the Department of Homeland Security.

The federal government has partially shut down after Congress did not agree on funding for several agencies before a deadline of midnight on Saturday. A government shutdown happens when lawmakers fail to pass a spending package for a period of time, usually either the full year or for a shorter period, known as a continuing resolution. This is only a partial shutdown: In this instance, Congress approved annual funding for certain agencies since the last shutdown ended, so those can continue operating while other departments go dark. It’s likely that immigration, border patrol and defense activities funded through the GOP’s tax and spending package will continue. Nearly all DHS personnel will continue working during a shutdown, according to the agency’s most recent contingency plan.

A man was sentenced to four years in federal prison Friday after he admitted to lighting a Molotov cocktail and throwing it at Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies during a protest last year against immigration raids. The U.S. attorney’s office said Gálvez was hiding behind a stone wall when he lit and threw a Molotov cocktail toward sheriff’s deputies, who were engaging in crowd control. The incendiary device landed in a grassy area near a protester’s foot, about 15 feet from sheriff’s deputies. “Defendant endangered everyone — law enforcement and civilians in the area — and is lucky that, despite his actions, no one was injured,” the prosecutors’ sentencing memo said.
