The same far-left Sumar coalition has turned its back to Algiers following a deal to form a coalition with Sanchez that included abandoning support for the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists. Sanchez won the support of Parliament to form a new government ending a political limbo that lasted for months since the PP that won elections failed to form a majority government. Under Sanchez administration, Spain has backed in 2022 Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only political solution to the Sahara issue, irking the Polisario and its mentor, Algeria. Algeria responded with a set of retaliatory measures including economic restrictions on Spanish imports and Spanish businesses, as well as threatening to cut gas. Earlier this month, Algeria returned its ambassador to Madrid, marking the recognition of its failure to pressure Spain to adopt a pro-separatist stance.

In early November, the governments of Kenya and Rwanda announced that they were extending visa-free travel to all African visitors to both countries. The two nations joined the Seychelles, Benin and Gambia in promising to remove visas as an obstacle to African travelers. While the move toward visa-free travel is a step in the right direction, it is not sufficient to address the range of challenges facing Africans crossing national borders in Africa. Free movement of people across Africa is not just a central demand of the pan-African movement. Free movement of people is also a key priority of the AU’s Agenda 2063, the main policy document that serves as a roadmap for the organization’s current programs.

"Coal in North Macedonia represents 40% of the energy source, so it's very big, it's very important," EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso told Reuters. Both of its coal-fired plants are ageing, outdated and run on lignite, the most polluting type of coal. An IFC spokesperson said the green transition, including in North Macedonia, was one of its key priorities, but that it was not in a position to confirm any plan details. "The world's richest countries need to work with the multilateral development banks to find effective, structural ways to channel significantly scaled up energy transition finance," he said. North Macedonia joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance, a group of countries committed to phasing out coal-fired power, in 2021.
