The Supreme Court’s Appellate Division – Bangladesh’s highest court – will announce its decision on the matter on Nov 20, reports bdnews24.com. Two crude bombs have exploded outside the abandoned office of the district Awami League in the City Hat area of Rajshahi city. Panic spread across the area following the explosions, prompting police to rush to the scene. “The assailants detonated two crude bombs in quick succession on the road in front of the abandoned Awami League office before fleeing,” officer Masuma said. According to the officer, police launched a drive in and around the area soon after arriving and recovered evidence of the explosions. She noted that BNP leaders in the area visited the site following the incident and intend to file a case soon.

The Anti-Corruption Commission is going to take legal steps against five people from four recruiting agencies over allegations of embezzlement and money laundering through syndication while sending workers to Malaysia. On Tuesday, ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain said the cases will bring charges involving embezzlement and laundering of Tk 3.1 billion against the agencies. On Sept 14, another case was filed against the top officials of 13 recruiting agencies for allegedly embezzling Tk 11.5 billion. Only 10 recruiting agencies used to send workers to Malaysia until 2016 under an agreement signed between Bangladesh and Malaysia. But syndication persisted, with a maximum of 25 recruiting agencies controlling the entire business.

EC invites 12 political parties on first day of dialogue ahead of general electionThe Election Commission has invited 12 political parties to join discussions on the first day of its planned dialogue series beginning Thursday, ahead of the February elections. On Tuesday, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the discussions will continue throughout the month in several phases. After receiving approval from the commission, letters were sent to the chiefs of the invited parties on Tuesday evening through special couriers. The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) of Dhaka has written to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner requesting him to ensure security in and around the court premises following a broad daylight murder near the court area. He was shot near the gate of Dhaka National Medical College, adjacent to the court area. “He appeared before a court and was killed beside the court premises while returning home. The incident shows the security situation in the court area is deplorable,” said the letter sent by the CMM court. The letter also noted that 37 magistrate courts operate daily in the Dhaka court complex, handling cases from 50 police stations across the city.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ishrat Jenifar Jerin on Tuesday sent the case to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges’ Court for further trial proceedings. The case alleged the accused participated in a Zoom meeting of the “Joy Bangla Brigade” and allegedly conspired to “overthrow the government”. A total of 261 accused in the case are absconding, including Hasina, who is currently residing in India, said Md Salahuddin, a bench assistant at the court. The chargesheet submitted on July 30, however, accused Hasina and 286 others. During the meeting, Hasina allegedly made anti-state remarks and instructed her followers to overthrow the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

A Bogura court has sentenced three people to death and three others to life in prison over the murder of Tozammel Haque, a candidate for chairman in the Bogura union council elections in 2017. Judge Shajahan Kabir of the Bogura District and Sessions Court delivered the verdict in the eight-year-old case after an extended trial on Tuesday. The death row convicts are Babul Prang aka Abul Kalam Azad, Manik, and Moniruzzaman aka Mishu. He said that on Nov 27, 2017, businessman and Union Parishad (UP) chairman candidate Tozammel had gone to Boithabhanga village to attend his cousin’s wedding. Based also said that of the six convicts, only Pintu was in court for the verdict.

The Election Commission (EC) is set to begin a dialogue with registered political parties ahead of the parliamentary polls. Iftekhar had taken a loan of over Tk 19.46 million out against an FDR worth Tk 22.9 million, opened by another EBL customer, Abul Mansur Khan. By forging the customer’s signature, the accused transferred a total of Tk 26.57 million from Abul Monsur’s account and misappropriated them.
