The government has extended the powers of executive magistracy granted to Bangladesh Army for another three and a half months (110 days) for a seventh time ahead of the upcoming general election. The Army was deployed across the country before the fall of the Awami League government. Although the curfew was lifted after the fall of the government on Aug 5, 2024, army personnel Aere left in the field to shore up the deteriorating law and order situation. Under the prevailing law and order situation, the Bangladesh Army was granted the powers of executive magistrates on Sept 17 last year. Later, a separate notification was issued giving the same powers to commissioned officers in the Navy and Air Force.

The finance ministry has approved the implementation of the decision to raise the pay scale of government primary school head teachers from grade 11 to grade 10. According to officials, the Implementation Wing of the ministry’s Finance Division has authorised the salary upgrade for 65,502 head teachers. “The order, issued on Sunday, has been sent to the primary and mass education ministry,” he said. Both supported upgrading the pay scale of head teachers to grade 10. The government expects that the head teachers will now be more motivated to enhance the standard of primary education with the support of other teachers and stakeholders.

An activist of the Mohammadpur unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, has been found dead in the capital. His colleagues reportedly broke down the door of a house in Chandrima Housing and took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The deceased Sabbir Hasan was the joint convener of the Mohammadpur Chhatra Dal unit, police said, citing findings in the initial investigation. Mohammadpur Police Station chief Kazi Rafiqul Ahmed said, “We have learnt that Sabbir lived in the flat with three or four other individuals. After repeated calls went unanswered, they broke the door and found him lying there, apparently after having hanged himself."

Crude bombs go off outside abandoned Awami League office in RajshahiTwo crude bombs have exploded outside the abandoned office of the district Awami League in the City Hat area of Rajshahi city. “The assailants detonated two crude bombs in quick succession on the road in front of the abandoned Awami League office before fleeing,” officer Masuma said. “It is believed that activists of the banned organisation brought out a sudden flash procession from the spot before setting off the bombs and escaping,” she added. According to the officer, police launched a drive in and around the area soon after arriving and recovered evidence of the explosions. She noted that BNP leaders in the area visited the site following the incident and intend to file a case soon.

Malaysia, which does not recognise refugee status, has in recent years begun to turn away boats and detain Rohingya as part of a crackdown on undocumented migrants. Rights group Amnesty International on Monday called on ASEAN to address the issue of Rohingya boats at sea. "The unconscionable practice of pushing boats away from borders must end, and regional governments must ensure that any boats carrying refugees and migrants are allowed to land safely in the nearest country," Amnesty said.

Fires have broken out in buses in at least three separate locations in Dhaka overnight. A man has burnt to death after a parked bus was set on fire in Mymensingh’s Fulbaria Upazila.
