May 31 (Reuters) - Michael Sabia is leaving his post as Canada's deputy finance minister to head Hydro-Quebec, a power-generating utility, the Quebec premier said in a tweet on Wednesday. Sabia, a top bureaucrat at Canada's federal finance ministry, will step down from his current role on June 2, the country's Department of Finance said. The utility has been without a permanent chief since April after Sophie Brochu stepped down as CEO two years ahead of schedule amid disagreements with the Quebec government over strategy. Sabia, who was the former head of Canada's second-biggest pension fund, took over as deputy minister of the federal finance ministry in December 2020. An evacuation order has been issued in Sambaa K’e, N.W.T., according to the territory’s Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, as a wildfire burns nearby. In an email to CBC News early Wednesday afternoon, department spokesperson Jay Boast confirmed the evacuation order and said an evacuation centre was being set up in Fort Simpson. Fire says the fire near Sambaa K’e has consumed nearly 100,000 hectares of land on both sides of the border, including nearly 50,000 hectares of land within the N.W.T. The fire is about 30 kilometres south of Sambaa K’e, she said, but winds are expected to start blowing the fire toward the community. Sambaa K’e is a community of under 100 in the Dehcho, about 150 kilometres south of Fort Simpson.

The Arctic Economic Council (AEC) has appointed Inger Johnsen as the new chair of the body. “Due to the war in Ukraine, it will not be business as usual, but we will continue to build up the AEC capacity to facilitate sustainable economic development in the Arctic.”The Arctic Economic Council was a Canadian initiative under its last Arctic Council chairmanship (2013-2015). The AEC was conceived to advise the Arctic Council on business issues. “Focusing on greening the economy in a way that it is a vehicle for sustainable economic growth and social development in the Arctic.”Though a separate body from the Arctic Council, the AEC leadership changes hands in concert with the Arctic Council rotating two-year chairmanship. Norway took over chairmanship of the Arctic Council from Russia on May 11.
