Some stone fruit crops, including peaches, nectarines and plums, have been lost after a cold snap in February, says an industry spokesperson. In March, the province announced it would spend $15 million to help fruit growers recover from the cold snap. Luckily, Lutz said, the majority of Nova Scotia's fruit tree industry is apples, and those trees survived the cold snap. But what about grapesVineyards in the Annapolis Valley are also feeling the impact of the cold snap. And virtually all viable vinifera buds, which produce grapes for high-end wines, were lost during the cold snap, he said.

Being poor is sufficient reason for people to be allowed to undergo assisted suicide, an academic paper has argued. In an article published in the Journal of Medical Ethics, Canadian bioethicists Prof Amy Mullin and Kayla Wiebe said assisted suicide “should be available” for people “in unjust social circumstances”. Allowing people in poverty to opt for euthanasia was an “imperfect” solution, they admitted, but was “a ‘lesser evil’ between two or more less than ideal options”. And Canadian-born Professor Kevin Yuill, Chief Executive of Humanists Against Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, said the article highlights just how “irrational the case for euthanasia has become”. The Committee is currently hearing evidence about assisted suicide, including on access to palliative care and the role of medics.

Activists plan to mark the anniversary in Minneapolis with a candlelight vigil Thursday night at George Floyd Square, the corner where Floyd died. Around the world, protests against racial violence and police brutality erupted after Floyd’s murder, reigniting the Black Lives Matter movement. In 2020, the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act, a piece of federal legislation, showed some signs of promise. Over the last three years, George Floyd’s family members have appeared at rallies and spoken out against police violence. While relatives and reform advocates urged for legislation changes, George Floyd’s youngest daughter, Gianna Floyd, met Biden at the White House in 2021.

At the same time, Metrolinx has cancelled buses because downtown traffic is so bad they can’t get to Union Station. We should modernize this old car-based infrastructure to be as useful as possible in the 21st century by building a dedicated busway on the Gardiner. A highway lane can carry 2,000 vehicles an hour (moving about 2,300 people in the GTA). A busway lane can carry 20,000 people an hour. Building a busway lane on the Gardiner would also be cheap and fast as a busway isn’t structurally that different than a road lane.

Ron DeSantis will have to live by after the epic launch of his campaign for the White House in 2024. The retailer’s decision follows controversy about a Bud Light beer commercial featuring a transgender female influencer Dylan Mulvaney that sparked a boycott. DeSantis’s pitch to Republican voters who might be weighing him against Trump is that he is capable of delivering the victory that eluded Trump in 2020. Trump himself clings to the falsehood that the presidency was based on fraudulent results and thus stolen from him. While many other Republicans share that view, DeSantis clearly called it as a loss — something that draws a line in the Republican sand.

TORONTO - Italian star Federico Bernardeschi’s emotional outburst after Toronto FC’s weekend 1-0 loss in Austin was “out of line,” says coach Bob Bradley. “It was a tough loss, a late goal after we had defended in a really good way. Toronto’s last goal came April 29, from CJ Sapong in a 1-0 win over visiting New York City FC. Asked if it has been more difficult than expected in embedding the two Italians in the team, Bradley pointed at himself. “Lorenzo’s frustrated — with injuries and with still the work that’s being done to build our team,” said Bradley.

Inclusive books build allyship by expanding people’s views and more allies means more support to the 2SLGBTQ* community, Mizzi says. “When you have an LGBTQ youth reading those books, and they see themselves reflected in the content of the book…they say, ‘Hey, that’s me and that’s something I’m going through. That’s my family.’ And when they see that, they feel validated…and it raises awareness to understanding,” Mizzi told the CBC. Community members can learn more about these items and more, including scholarships, by visiting UM’s new 2SLGBTQ* website. UM encourages all who are able to join upcoming Pride events during Pride week 2023.
