BC will be the 1st province to take this step to treat addiction as a health issue, not a criminal justice one. https://t.co/jAa8Ehmcqt pic.twitter.com/0yMqnvvp6k — BC Government News (@BCGovNews) January 26, 2023How does decriminalization affect drug users? But the new decriminalization rules won’t help all drug users. “It’s important to note that in other jurisdictions that have implemented decriminalization, like Portugal and Oregon, there hasn’t been a lot of reported increases of this kind,” said Richardson, who said even before decriminalization, drug use in public and the existence of paraphernalia were already common. “Decriminalization doesn’t change anything about the currently toxic drug supply and may not impact the risk of overdose or other adverse drug effects in beneficial ways,” said Richardson.

With her salty laugh and her no-nonsense advice, Hazel McCallion charmed us, chastised us and loved us. To be honest, Hazel and I had some feisty conversations about development issues — especially when it came to the Greenbelt. Hazel was always impatient about the exclusion of women from work, politics or sport. Hazel told a great story about the fight in Mississauga in 1979 to allow women to be hired as garbage collectors. Kathleen Wynne was the premier of Ontario from 2013 to 2018 and the province’s first female premier.

For a while it looked as if the most interesting thing about the Leafs game against the Washington Capitals on Sunday was the pre-game celebration of John Tavares's 1,000th game. Morgan Rielly ended a season-long drought with his first goal, one of four the Leafs scored in the period, and Toronto went on to win 5-1. He raised his stick and looked to the rafters in a mix of celebration and relief after his goal. Tavares got on the scoresheet twice, setting up Michael Bunting for the Leafs’ first goal — after Nicklas Backstrom had given Washington a 1-0 lead in the first period — and Rielly’s go-ahead goal. William Nylander made it 3-1 with his team-leading 28th goal of the season, extending his point streak to seven games.

Richmond Police Officer David Edward Stone, a Louisa County resident, was arrested last week on 50 child pornography charges. Stone has served on the Richmond police force since 2006, reports The Daily Progress. And the Richmond police have been doing a creditable job in the past several months. But Stone reminds us that occasionally the cops are the criminals. Spotting and purging bad actors is all the more imperative when police departments are drastically understaffed, recruitment is suffering, and the temptation is strong to take anyone who seems remotely qualified.

Supermarket fridges aren't like your fridge at home, which typically contains less than 200 grams of refrigerant. On average, it found a single supermarket emits 875 pounds (400 kilograms) of HFCs a year, equivalent to carbon emissions from 300 cars. In the U.S. alone, it calculated supermarket HFC leaks cause as much global warming as burning 22 million tonnes of coal. Since a typical refrigeration system lasts about 30 years, decisions made now about what refrigerant to use can affect global emissions for decades. The federal government will start to offer carbon offset credits for projects that cut refrigerant emissions, including those in supermarkets.

A mining corporation on Sunday apologized for losing a highly radioactive capsule over a 1,400-kilometre stretch of Western Australia, as authorities combed parts of the road looking for the tiny but dangerous substance. The truck transporting the capsule arrived at a Perth depot on Jan. 16. Emergency services in Western Australia have called on other Australian states and the federal government for support finding the capsule because they lack equipment. The caesium-137 ceramic source, commonly used in radiation gauges, emits dangerous amounts of radiation, equivalent to receiving 10 X-rays in an hour, Western Australia Chief Health Officer Dr. Andrew Robertson said. © Department of Fire and Emergency Services/Government of Western Australia The capsule is shown in this graphic beside an Australian 10-cent coin.
