I’d been wandering through some residential neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires, pulling away from the noisy banging of the pots and pans that defined the political crisis in the streets. I’ve spent 30 years covering the area where economics, public policy, business and politics intersect: 24 federal budgets, four prime ministers, seven finance ministers, a decade of Parliament Hill bureau-chiefing. The Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s and the ripple effects felt later in Argentina showed us that contagion is just not rational. The Great Financial Crisis is a case in point. Your respectful participation in the conversation is what makes for better ideas, better policy and better journalism.

And they looked like they were going down the same path Monday against the Islanders, a listless first period. You could say they played down to their opponent, but their opponent — a team with two wins in January — actually outplayed them. Costello played two games for the Leafs, Strong played 11. The drafting of Ihnacak (102 goals in 417 games over eight seasons) saves it from being the worst Leafs trade. Only the New Jersey Devils (.357 winning percentage) were worse than the Leafs (.388) over the 800 games of the ’80s.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra promised Tuesday that changes to the air passenger bill of rights are coming this spring. Nick Iwanyshyn/The Canadian PressAlghabra said regulatory reform — and possibly new legislation — will be introduced this spring to bolster passengers' rights. While bad weather is hard to avoid in a country like Canada, Alghabra said changes are still necessary to make the travel experience more tolerable. During a heated House of Commons transport committee meeting earlier this month, officials from Air Canada, WestJet and Sunwing expressed frustration with how the regime operates. Asked if Air Canada would support additional fines or penalties for airlines, Rheault said no.

Classified documents at Pence’s home, too, his lawyer saysNEW YORK (AP) — Documents with classified markings were discovered in former Vice President Mike Pence's Indiana residence last week, his lawyer says, the latest in a string of recoveries of confidential information from the homes of current and former top U.S. officials. Trump is currently under criminal investigation after roughly 300 documents with classified markings, including at the top-secret level, were discovered at Mar-a-Lago. Biden is also subject to a special counsel investigation after classified documents from his time as a senator and in the Obama administration were found at his properties. The presence of secret documents at all three men's homes further underscores the federal government’s unwieldy system for storing and protecting the millions of classified documents it produces every year. Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas noted that classified documents are only moved out of the committee’s offices in locked bags.

The Toronto Raptors are a franchise that a lot of eyes will be in the coming weeks as the NBA trade deadline nears. There is a lot of talent on the Raptors’ roster, but they are lacking that bonafide go-to star. Toronto would throw the trade market for a loop making Fred VanVleet, Gary Trent Jr., Pascal Siakam, or OG Anunoby available in a trade. As per Bruce Arthur of TheStar.com, the Raptors already have a huge offer on the table in exchange for Anunoby. At least one team has previously offered three first-round picks for Anunoby, and Siakam is worth more.

CBC Equine was founded to provide a resource for the local community in the form of riding lessons and therapeutic sessions. Since its founding, CBC Equine has become an integral part of the Sacramento county area and its surroundings, partnering with safe houses, after-school programs, youth programs, and other communities seeking a connection with horses. The barn her business uses is on a property that houses multiple riding programs, and the flooding made for some necessary evacuations to higher ground. “There’s still a lot on our wish list we could use,” Brittney said. Let’s help CBC Equine get back on its feet: you can donate via the program’s Amazon Wish List here or directly on their website here.

Hudon, formerly Canada’s ambassador to France, was appointed head of the crown corporation by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2021. The sources – who either work at the BDC or recently left the crown corporation – highlighted contracts awarded to consulting firm McKinsey & Company as well as questionable spending on events and transportation. McKinsey was awarded a $2.8 million contract for the BDC review in August 2021 and a $2.1-million extension in June 2022. Radio-Canada’s sources say the decision was met with frustration by BDC employees, who had completed similar strategic exercises before Hudon’s arrival. BDC employees also criticized certain spending choices under Hudon, including a $320,000 “outreach event” that was streamed to thousands of BDC employees across the country.
