CAIRO – 14 September 2023: The joint Egyptian-American military exercise dubbed “Bright Star 2023” continued its activities on Thursday. Members of the joint Egyptian-US military drill carried out a naval exercise as part of the training. The past few days witnessed the influx of participating forces and movement to specialized training areas and fields in preparation for the beginning of the exercise activities. He said that the training enhances joint capabilities to solve problems, confront challenges and unify military concepts between the countries’ armed forces. The commanders of the participating countries' forces inspected an exhibition of weapons and equipment involved in the training, expressing their happiness at the high morale of the participating forces from the various countries

US To Hithhold $85 Million In Military Aid To EgyptThe United States is set to withhold $85 million in military aid to Egypt, according to Reuters and the Wall Street Journal. The funds, a small part of the $1.3bn in annual US military aid to Cairo, will be directed to Taiwan and Lebanon, a State Department letter to congressional committees showed. The $85 million was conditioned by the US on the release of political prisoners, with lawmakers urging the Biden administration to withhold $235 million more. And despite the calls to curtail a portion of US military aid to Egypt, Washington has continued to reward Cairo with arms sales. Sisi has consistently denied there are political prisoners in Egypt and has instead framed the crackdown as part of a fight against terrorism.

Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) has recently unveiled the “Metaverse for Startups” competition, which seeks to promote and support startups that utilize metaverse technology and solutions in various industries aligned with sustainable development goals. Out of 17 applicants, EUI selected 10 startups to compete in the competition. These startups were introduced to a panel of experts from Meta, EUI, AUC Venture Lab, and Significa Ventures. Reem Bahgat stated that EUI is among the leading universities specializing in communications, digital technologies, and related fields. Ahmed Dalal expressed his pleasure in participating in the event and highlighted AUC’s focus on metaverse technologies.

Egypt - The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) has reached a preliminary agreement with Actis, a British direct investment company, to sell the Gabal El-Zeit wind farm for $350m, sources close to the deal told Daily News Egypt. The deal is expected to be finalized in early November, after Actis completed the due diligence process and obtained the approval of the New and Renewable Energy Authority. The station has a capacity of 580 megawatts and is located in the Red Sea governorate. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, confirmed the existence of an initial agreement to sell the wind station in an interview with Bloomberg TV on Tuesday. She said that Egypt had received five offers for the station, but did not disclose the identity of the other bidders or any other details.

The Egyptian government has reached an agreement with Gulf sovereign funds that invested in Egyptian companies to postpone the distribution of dividends for three years, according to sources familiar with the matter. The sources told Daily News Egypt that the Central Bank of Egypt will guarantee the necessary dollar liquidity to transfer the investors’ profits into foreign currency after the end of the period. The agreement covers the recent investments made by Abu Dhabi Holding in three government companies: National Drilling Company, Egyptian Linear Alkyl Benzene, and the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company, worth $800m. It also covers the investments made by the Saudi Egyptian Investment Company, affiliated with the Saudi Public Investment Fund, in four major Egyptian companies: e-finance, Abu Qir Fertilizers, Misr Fertilizers Production Company, and Alexandria Container and Cargo Handling, worth $1.3bn. In addition, the agreement includes the investments made by Abu Dhabi Holding in five companies listed on the Egyptian Exchange, worth $1.85bn.

Regarding the economic axis, two specialists' sessions were held Wednesday within the National Dialogue. The other was on enhancing the population characteristics, and diagnosing the status quo. Also, earlier this week, a closed session titled "Price Hikes and Ways to Alleviate Citizens' Economic Burdens" kicked off Tuesday. The meeting's goal was articulating the recommendations and proposals put forward during public sessions, combining them together in a draft that will be submitted to the president of the republic.

Egypt is getting ready to host the eighth annual meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Sharm El-Sheikh on 25-26 September. The Prime Minister instructed that the event be organized similarly to the climate summit that was held in Sharm El-Sheikh last year. He noted that the Egyptian state has mobilized all its resources to make AIIB’s upcoming annual meetings in Sharm El-Sheikh a big success. He indicated that Egypt’s subscription to AIIB’s capital stands at $650m, making it the largest subscriber in Africa. The Minister of Finance also pointed out that AIIB’s investment portfolio in Egypt stands at $1.3bn, and that AIIB will also offer a guarantee for Egypt issuing green Panda bonds in Chinese Yuan worth $500m.

A ministerial steering committee met on Wednesday to review the implementation of the Kitchener Canal rehabilitation and development project, which aims to improve the canal’s efficiency and the living conditions of the residents along its course. The participants discussed the executive status of the project and the coordination among the concerned parties to accelerate its completion. The Kitchener Canal is one of the largest agricultural canals in Egypt, with a length of 69 kilometers. He said that his ministry had completed the environmental study for the project and obtained the approval of the Environmental Affairs Agency. She said that a technical committee was formed in 2020 to follow up on all technical aspects of the project.

CAIRO - 13 September 2023: Egypt will establish an integrated industrial complex for flat steel’s production in cooperation with an unnamed international company with an investments of $1 billion. Cabinet Spokesman, Nader Saad, explained that the project’s area is 1.5 million square meters. He added that the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) has approved the project. This came within Egypt’s efforts under President El-Sisi’s directives of providing a supportive environment for Egypt’s heavy industries sector especially the iron and steel industry. The project will be the step in achieving state’s plan to develop the heavy and strategic industries and boost local industrialization in the heavy industries sector.
