CAIRO – 5 September 2021: IHS Markit Egypt Purchasing Managers’ IndexTM (PMI) rose to 49.8 in August, up from 49.1 in July. “Input prices rose at the quickest rate for two years, leading to a sharp increase in output charges amid worries that escalating costs would dampen firms’ profits. "However, PMI data also showed the widespread risk of inflation, as input prices picked up at the fastest rate since August 2019. Consequently, purchasing activity rose at the strongest rate on record, although global supplier delays meant that firms are yet to see many of these inputs arrive,” Owen added. Purchasing activity expanded for the first time in nine months and at the quickest pace since the series began in April 2011.

CAIRO – 5 September 2021: Egypt’s Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait affirmed that the Egyptian economy has become more capable of facing challenges and meeting the aspirations of the people, referring that it ranked second globally in the "Economist" index for the return to pre-pandemic life. Maait stated that this reflects the government's success in the elaborate implementation of the economic reform program, in a way that contributed to enabling the Egyptian economy to contain the repercussions of the pandemic. “In Egypt, we are keen on the stability of tax policies in the structural reforms package to attract investment,” he said. Maait explained that government investments during the current fiscal year witnessed an unprecedented increase of 27.6 percent to maximize spending on development projects. Twelve people were killed and 34 others injured in a bus crash last night at on the Suez – Cairo Road when a tourist bus overturned and collided against a concrete barrier. The Suez Ambulance Authority announced that 30 ambulances had been sent to transfer the injured from the scene of the accident to Suez General Hospital and nearby hospitals. Suez Governorate officials moved to the Suez General Hospital to follow up on the injured and providing them with medical care. The agency added that the number of car accident deaths rose to 3,484 in 2019 – an increase of 12.9 percent. The rate of car accidents increased to 27.4 accidents per day in 2019, it said.

The chief of Egypt’s farmers syndicate, Hussien Abdel-Rahman Abu-Sadam warned Friday that some farmers in Sohag governorate, Upper Egypt, are complaining of a worm that eats up their crops, especially maize, which is believed to be the fall armyworm. He warned that this is amongst the most dangerous pests that have entered Egypt recently. The armyworm was first discovered in Egypt in May 2019 within the governorates of Aswan, Luxor and Qena. A single insect can lay about 2000 eggs at one time, which hatch quickly over three days in the summer. The chief of Egypt’s farmers syndicate said that maize is one of the favored crops for this insect.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A senior Lebanese government delegation asked Syria on Wednesday to allow Egyptian natural gas and Jordanian electricity to pass through its territory to ease a crippling fuel crisis that has paralyzed Lebanon. “The Lebanese side asked Syria’s help in facilitating the transfer of Egyptian natural gas and Jordanian electricity through Syrian territories. The Syrian side welcomed the request,” said Nasri Khoury, the head of Damascus-based Syrian Lebanese Higher Council, a government-linked body for bilateral relations. The flow of Egyptian natural gas to Syria was discontinued in 2010 because of sabotage attacks and shortages. It is not clear if the U.S. would consider the transfer of natural gas through Syria as a humanitarian gesture, since humanitarian aid is exempt from the sanctions.
