Egyptian director Omar al-Zuhairy won the grand prize for his film “Reesh” (Feathers) at the International Critics’ Week competition during the 74th Cannes Film Festival in France. “Reesh” is the first feature film for the 33-year-old director, who also contributed to its script. The film was well received by critics when it was shown on Tuesday at the festival, leaving victorious over seven other films in the competition. During one of the magician’s tricks, the father is turned into a chicken and the magician is unable to change him back. CAIRO – 15 July 2021: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Malaysian counterpart, Hishammuddin Hussein, discussed on Wednesday the preparations for the joint ministerial commission scheduled to be held in Kuala Lampur and the arrangements in this regard. This includes the first meeting for political consultations between senior officials of the two countries' foreign ministries to be held in Cairo, a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry read. Egypt’s Health Ministry on Monday confirmed 89 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total number of confirmed cases up to 283,409. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths has now reached 16,418 nationwide, after the ministry announced six deaths. Madbouly announced at the beginning of June that 2.5 million citizens have received a vaccine against COVID-19, out of Egypt’s population of 104 million. The Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement, Supply, Medical Supply and Medical Technology Administration (UPA) announced in mid-June that it has secured over 46 million COVID-19 doses during the fiscal year 2020/2021. Egypt’s Prime Minister added that Egypt has also produced one million doses of China’s Sinovac vaccine thus far.

CAIRO – 14 July 2021: Three Egyptian military airplane loaded with medical equipment and supplies arrived on Wednesday in the Tunisia per directives of President Abdel Fatah al Sisi to help easing and facing the crisis of COVID-19 effect on the Arab-brotherly country. The airplanes took off from Almaza Air Force Base Airport loaded with medical shipments provided by the Egyptian Health Ministry with the aim of alleviating burdens on Tunisian people. On July 10, Egypt sent two trucks carrying more than 31 tons of medical supply to Tunisia, which announced the collapse of its medical sector against fighting the coronavirus. Zayed, added that President Sisi gave his direction, expressing Egypt’s support to the Tunisian people. CAIRO – 14 July 2021: Egypt will eliminate any obstacles to the work of U.S. oil company Apache in Egypt as it expands oil exploration in the country, according to a Wednesday statement on the meeting of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Apache’s CEO John Christmann. Minister of Petroleum Tarek al-Mulla and other senior officials attended the meeting, where the investment plans for the next few years of the largest oil producer in Egypt were presented. The president emphasized the strategic relations between Egypt and Apache, as well as all U.S. companies in the framework of the distinguished ties of the two countries. He said Egypt is at the forefront of countries that Apache eyes for further investment considering the positive investment environment in the North African state. CAIRO – 14 July 2021: A southern Cairo court judge ordered the detention of Egyptian businessman Hassan Rateb for another 15 days pending investigation over funding a former MP in illegal excavation operations. The prosecution has accused Rateb of funding former MP Alaa Hassanin of funding the excavation of antiquities as its investigations revealed that Rateb provided millions of Egyptian pounds to Hassanin and his brother to help them in the excavation. The prosecution ordered the detention of Hassanin, former Al-Mihwar owner Hassan Rateb and 17 others pending investigation in the illegal excavation case. Rateb is accused of funding the digging process, which, according to the police investigations, occurred in different areas in the republic. The prosecution said it seized four deep digging sites, noting that the antiquities committee confirmed that the digging work was made to excavate antiquities.

Egyptian veteran diplomat and director of Bibliotheca Alexandria pointed the finger at Israel on Tuesday over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis. He also indicated that the American and Russian positions on GERD would change if Israel is convinced to support Egypt. Negotiations over the dam between Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan have stalled for years, with the three parties ultimately failing to reach any agreements. Ethiopia officially informed Egypt on July 5 that it had started the second filling of GERD reservoir, a move that was unilaterally rejected by Egypt. The disputed dam is the largest hydroelectric project in Africa, with a cost of more than US$4 billion.
