(Reuters) - Bayern Munich speedster Alphonso Davies will miss the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup due to an ankle injury, Canada Soccer said on Friday. Davies, who suffered the injury during training earlier this week, has returned to German champions Bayern Munich to begin his recovery ahead of the new Bundesliga season. In his Gold Cup debut, a 16-year-old Davies won the Golden Boot as the top scorer and helped Canada reach the quarter-final for the first time since 2009. Through six international matches in 2021 with Canada’s national team, Davies has four goals and a team-best five assists. The Gold Cup is scheduled for July 10-Aug. 1 in the United States.

AFP - Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has extended his contract until 2024, the La Liga champions announced Thursday. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was briefed in a meeting on the details of a national project to be established in partnership between the petroleum sector and international company Bechtel regarding a petrochemical complex the Suez Canal, the largest of its kind in the region, at an investment value of about US$7.5 billion. CAIRO – 9 July 2021: Former First Lady Jihane El Sadat passed away Friday in one of Cairo's hospitals at the age of 87. Sadat was born on August 29, 1933 to Egyptian surgeon Safwat Raouf and English music teacher Gladys Cotteril. In 1949, she got married to late President Anwar al-Sadat, who was older than her by 15 years. At the time, he was a divorced man with three daughters, who were living with their mother in Menoufia governorate, his birthplace. Two weeks ago news came in that Jihane al-Sadat was admitted to hospital without her children officially disclosing the reason.

The wife of the late President Mohamed Anwar al-Sadat, Jehan al-Sadat passed away after a short struggle with illness. The Presidency of the Arab Republic of Egypt mourned with great sorrow the death of Sadat in a statement, saying: “The wife of the late Sadat, the hero of war and peace, who provided a model for the Egyptian woman in supporting her husband under the most difficult and precise circumstances, until he led the country to achieve historic victory in the glorious October War, which represented a milestone in the modern history of Egypt.”On Thursday, Mohamed Anwar al-Sadat, a member of the family, commented on the health condition of Jehan, saying that she had contracted a disease more than a year and a half or two years ago, and she was treated abroad for a while and returned to Egypt where she continued to receive treatment. But over the past two weeks, she has not been well, and her condition went critical. Sadat assured she did not die of coronavirus.

CAIRO – 9 July 2021: The Health Ministry said 155 new coronavirus cases were detected on Thursday, upping the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak in the country began to 282,737. In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 19 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 16,351. As many as 765 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 216,982 so far, the spokesman said. Egypt, besides receiving millions of coronavirus vaccine doses from abroad, has locally produced a million Chinese Sinovac doses as part of its vaccination campaign. Egypt’s local production of coronavirus vaccine aims to achieve self-sufficiency for the vaccination needs in the country and to turn Egypt into a hub for exporting vaccine doses to Africa.

International company MSC has announced the launch of cruise trips in the Red Sea, operating the first global giant ship to depart from Saudi Arabia to local and regional destinations. The trips will start from July 30 and will last for three months. The cruise trips will start from the city of Jeddah, reaching Aqaba in Jordan, or Safaga in Egypt, extending from three to four nights. The ship’s capacity will be about 1,900 cabins, and each trip will carry more than 3,000 passengers, limited to those vaccinated against coronavirus or those with a negative PCR test.

CAIRO – 9 July 2021: The Egyptian Presideny on Friday mourned the death of Gihane El-Sadat, 88, the widow of former President Anwar El-Sadat. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi ordered awarding her the Order of the Virtues. Gihane El-Sadat, who suffered from cancer, died after struggle with illness and after she spent around a month in the intensive care unit. “The Egyptian Presidency mourns with deep sadness and sorrow Mrs. Gihane El-Sadat, the wife of the late President Anwar El-Sadat, the war and peace hero,” the presidential statement read. Gihane El-Sadat had introduced “a model for the Egyptian woman supporting her husband under the most difficult and critical circumstances until he led the country to achieve the historic victory in the glorious October War,” the statement read.
