Ethiopian sustainable tech startup Kubik has scored a first for the country. According to a press release sent to AFROTECH™, it has raised $5.2 million in a seed round. Investors include East African venture capital firm African Renaissance Partners, Endgame Capital, and King Philanthropies. It will now further its work in using plastic waste to make affordable buildings and removing waste from the environment. Additionally, it seeks to improve its technology that will help to track waste and gather metrics on environmental impact.

They were picked from more than 70 scholarships, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said at the team announcement on Thursday. On Tuesday, a third runner on the team was suspended for a positive doping test. The refugee team was created by the IOC for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro to allow athletes to keep competing, even if they have been forced to leave their home countries. There were 10 athletes in Rio, with Syrian swimmer Yusra Mardini becoming the first to compete.

A bill to protect sex workers from unfair discrimination and decriminalise the industry passed the state parliament on Thursday. The reforms will repeal criminal offences applying specifically to sex workers, create new offences to protect children and specifically prohibit a person being coerced to perform sex work. In the ACT, some forms of sex work are legal, but laws mandate condom use and criminalise street-based sex work and co-operative working arrangements. A review by the Queensland Law Reform Commission in April 2023 made 47 recommendations to decriminalise sex work. The state has 20 licensed brothels and most sex work occurs outside the regulated or licensed sector.

In September 2023, Girma Amente, Minister of Agriculture, unveiled the government’s robust plan to procure 23 million quintals of fertilizer for the current harvest, signaling a marked increase from the previous seasons. This year’s fertilizer procurement is nearly twice the 14 million quintals of fertilizer imported in the previous harvesting season. The Corporation has indicated that of the total fertilizer procured for this season’s harvest, 12 million quintals (52% of the total) have been received at the Djibouti port. The initial consignment of fertilizers designated for this harvest season began arriving at the Djibouti port by late October 2023. Last year, the timely delivery of these vital agricultural inputs to small-scale farmers across the country was marred by significant disruptions.

They were saved at the last minute by members of her community, sleeping the night in a friend's garage. Some 60 per cent of migrants and refugees surveyed say it is more difficult for those without English as their first language to secure affordable housing. About half of migrants and refugees polled (49 per cent) felt they were unfairly blamed as the main cause of Australia's housing affordability crisis. Experts have called for the private rental market to be regulated with input and enforcement from industry bodies.
