Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow says: “It’s hard to exaggerate just how serious the situation is in Tigray. The small numbers of children who are attending are barely able to interact because of what they have endured and their unrelenting hunger. When the surrounding community heard Mary’s Meals representatives were visiting Ara Primary School, 15 students registered for school in just a few hours. “The task of building lasting peace requires that all citizens add their responsibility,” the state minister is cited as saying. He added that “conflicts happening in Ethiopia are tarnishing the long history of the country and its image. One of the damages that ethnic politics did was that the past – where there was legal infrastructure for or interest in ethnic politics – was demonized while ethnic politics is painted as an expression of “freedom and self-governance.” Now there are voices, albeit not powerful, that are glorifying Ethiopian history. Mulugeta Itefa, Board Chairperson of Ethiopia’s Peace Institute, said, as cited by ENA, “Our Ethiopian forefathers have given us a country whose independence was defended. Human Rights Organizations accuse the Ethiopian government of extrajudicial killing hundreds of civilians in the region and drone strikes but the government denies it.

In such circumstance, it is fair to say that the Ethiopian state in itself has become tattered (if you’re feeling optimistic) or even perhaps a fully failed state (if you’re pessimistic). Youth unemployment is over 60% (60 per cent). What better proof do you require to believe that, indeed, Ethiopia is a failed state?
