“They attempted a coup and failed to materialise their objective,” Embalo said after members of the National Guard command improperly released two ministers detained over alleged corruption, resulting in a shootout with the Presidential Palace Battalion. The military leaders of Burkina Faso and Niger said Saturday they would quit the G5 anti-jihadist force in Africa's Sahel area, the latest blow to the fight against insurgents in one of the world's most troubled regions. The G5, created in 2014, has secured only meagre results, with Mali also quitting the original five-nation force last year, also in the wake of a military coup. Burkina and Niger "have decided in full sovereignty to quit all instances of the G5 Sahel, including the joint force" as of November 29, the two countries said in a statement. Worse, the legitimate ambitions of our countries, of making the G5 Sahel a zone of security and development, are hindered by institutional red tape from a previous era, which convinces us that our process of independence and dignity is not compatible with G5 participation in its current form," they said. .In a veiled reference to france, they added that "the g5 sahel cannot serve foreign interests to the detriments of our people, and even less the dictates of any power in the name of a partnership that treats them like children, denying the sovereignty of our peoples."

Everybody agrees there is enough food to feed the world but there is not enough agreement on how to go about feeding it. Outside the core issue of limiting global warming via the net-zero carbon push, the most important developments at Cop28 relate to food. The World Food Programme’s climate point man, Gernot Laganda, sat with me during Cop28 to run through just why this is important. Mr Laganda makes the point that a summit where leaders are making pledges day by day for strengthening food systems is a good thing. What we have on the table is a climate crisis and the resulting humanitarian crisis.

NAIROBI: An armed group has killed “many civilians” in Ethiopia’s most populous region, local authorities said Saturday, just 11 days after talks between the government and the Oromo Liberation Army ended without agreement. Classified as a “terrorist organisation” by Addis Ababa, the OLA has been fighting the government since 2018 after splitting from the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) when it renounced armed struggle. Ethiopian federal soldiers have been accused of looting and indiscriminately killing civilians in Amhara as they pursue their former allies, the Fano militia. The government is willing to resume peace talks “if the terror group refrains from its terror acts and returns to peaceful discussion,” Adugna said. Talks in Tanzania to put an end to five years of insurrection ended November 21 without resolution, with each side blaming the other for the breakdown.
