ADDIS ABABA – The third Joint Committee Meeting of the Monitoring, Verification and Compliance Mechanism (MVCM) of the Ethiopian peace process was held on Friday. The African Union convened the meeting “to reflect on progress, challenges, and opportunities” in implementing the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA), signed on Nov 2 last year. Representatives of the Federal government of Ethiopia, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), and the AU High-Level Panel attended the meeting. The committee – proposed the extension of the mandate of the MVCM from Jan 1 to Dec 1, 2024 – agreed to convene “a strategic reflection session” “at the earliest possible time but not later than two months”. The AU announced the commitment of one million US Dollars from its Peace Fund towards implementing the Permanent COHA, and appreciated the federal government and the TPLF for their commitment to the spirit of African Solutions to African problems.
