The head of French warplane maker Dassault Aviation said he had taken note of what he described as Airbus' refusal to work with it on a next-generation fighter, and that the FCAS project would be "dead" unless that stance changed. Plans for the next phase of a 100 billion euro ($116 billion) development between France, represented by Dassault, and Germany and Spain, represented by Airbus, are widely seen as near collapse amid a worsening spat between the aerospace groups. Some of the resulting shortages in oil (and perhaps also gas) supplies will be made up by increasing purchases from Russia. Not only by India, but perhaps also by traditional US allies, such as oil-starved countries like Japan and South Korea. The regime in Iran seems to be resilient enough to survive the elimination of several of its top commanders. Further, if there is an American retreat, India’s role in the region would expand significantly, both economically and militarily. Besides the economic concerns, there is the prospect of hundreds of Indians facing an imminent threat to life and harsh economic realities.

Sri Lanka rescued 32 “critically wounded” sailors aboard the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, which sank Wednesday (March 4, 2026) just outside the island’s territorial waters, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said. Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry said it was searching for the other crew of the IRIS Dena, which went down about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of the island. Ms. Herath said two Sri Lankan navy vessels and an aircraft were deployed for the rescue operation, but did not say what caused the Iranian warship to sink. Mr. Sampath said their operation was in line with Sri Lanka’s maritime obligations and that 32 Iranian sailors were evacuated to the main hospital in Galle, 115 kilometres (70 miles) south of the capital Colombo. Both Sri Lanka’s Navy and the Air Force said they were not releasing footage of the rescue because it involved the military of another state.

News outlet Visegrád 24, meanwhile, reported on Wednesday that the US had destroyed the IRIS Fateh. LiveMint, however, could not independently confirm these reports, as either side has not issued any official statements yet regarding the IRIS Fateh. The IRIS Fateh is the Iranian Navy's first indigenous, fully sized submarine, per Forbes, although it is basic by US Navy standards. It had also entered into our territorial waters but ... it corrected its course after being warned," Iranian navy commander Shahram Irani said on state television, as per Reuters.
