When we invest in women and girls, we invest in the future for every community and every business. When we back women and girls with equal opportunity across education pathways and industry, minds shift, and culture slowly begins to change. It may surprise many readers, but in Ireland in 2026, we continue to hold young girls back through discriminatory practices developed in the last century, that continue, largely unchallenged, today. The Department of Education reports that while 96% of boys schools offer a science, technology, engineering, and maths (Stem) subject at second level, only 71% of girls’ schools do. It matters when the effect of denying girls access to applied Stem subjects at second level is to quietly write them out of the economies of the future.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Canadian prime minister Mark Carney said the old world order is "not coming back". Invoking Vaclav Havel, he said it was time to stop pretending that what the western powers called a rules-based order was not a self-serving sham. “We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false. “And the question for middle powers, like Canada, is not whether to adapt to the new reality – we must. But that engagement could be more successful and on more equal terms if middle powers come together to give themselves greater leverage.

One of them is being able to call Donald Trump a liar and face no consequences – as Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary did last week. Elon Musk – Trump’s erstwhile government efficiency tsar – certainly heard O’Leary last week when he dissed the prospect of installing Musk’s Starlink satellite system on the airline’s planes. “I would pay no attention whatsoever to Elon Musk ... He’s an idiot, very wealthy, but he’s still an idiot,” shot back O’Leary. Insulting two of the world’s most powerful men is not a bad week’s work for O’Leary, even by his own standards. In reality, the EU has far more leverage over Trump than it appears to realise or be prepared to use.

He boasts it took him 3 minutes per country to get them to agree to up their drug prices so the US can lower theirs. "We're not going to subsidise the world," he says.

All Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) hospitals can continue to train doctors, but improvements in HR, including rostering of doctors and IT, are needed for patient safety, according to the Medical Council. A mute swan and cygnets search for food in the shallow stream at Marina Park Ballintemple, Cork. Mute swans are thought to be the descendants of domesticated swans, prized for their meat through the Middle Ages. Each and every mute swan was legally declared to be the property of the British crown. Another species of swan, the Bewick’s swan, also known as Tundra swan, is a far less common sight now in Ireland. The success of the whooper swan is certainly something to celebrate and support.
