On March 16th, 1951, the first duty-free airport shop in the world, selling spirits as well as cigarettes to passengers, opened in the transit lounge at Shannon Airport in Co Clare. The latter exemption operated only providing the goods were not entering the country in which the free airport was located. They felt it would much greater customs and police staff to prevent smuggling of duty-free goods out of the airport. Experienced instructor Stephen Hoare, 37, and his tandem passenger Alex Welling, 32, died while skydiving at Goulburn airport in southern NSW in 2021. SafeWork NSW charged Goulburn Flight Training Centre and its sole director Attilio Giovanni Ferrara, known as John Ferrara, with two counts each of breaching workplace safety duties. The flight school and its director were found guilty of the safety breaches in NSW District Court on Tuesday. It showed Mr Welling grinning as he moved towards the open door of the plane while strapped to Mr Hoare. Transgender girls must leave Girlguiding by September 6, the organisation has said following its announcement in December that membership would be restricted to girls and young women.
