The reduction would limit taxi licensing control to only authorities who manage local transport planning – such as county councils and city councils.

Dubliner Daniel Tatlow-Devally has been in prison since last September after a break-in at the German subsidiary of Israel’s largest arms company Elbit Systems. Tatlow-Devally is one of five people who were arrested at the factory in the southwestern city of Ulm on September 8th. Tatlow-Devally is being held on 23-hour solitary lockdown, allowed just 30-minute family visits every fortnight and, in letters to loved ones, is worried about the consequences of pretrial detention. The Government has been called on to seek assurances from energy companies that the cuts in excise duty will be passed onto consumers as soon as possible. Mr Doherty said the package announced today "doesn't cut it" and Sinn Féin will be putting forward an amendment that would look for the maximum reduction for diesel and petrol." Labour TD Ged Nash described the package announced today as "timid, anaemic, and underwhelming". While he welcomed the immediate intervention to cut excise duty, he said there needs to be a commitment from Government, retailers and industry bodies that the reductions will be felt at the pump. She said increases at the fuel pumps were almost "immediate", which "needs to be reflected" following the cuts in excise duty announced today.

The fuel industry has warned that it could take consumers several days to feel the effects of excise cuts at the petrol pumps. However, representatives of the fuel industry have now warned that punters at the petrol pumps may not feel cuts immediately. Mr McPartlan said that those buying petrol or diesel at large or “high throughput” petrol stations may see the excise cuts resulting in price changes “within hours”. Petrol prices across the country have now surpassed the €2 per litre mark, while diesel prices are close to €2.30 per litre. The Government is set to announce a time-bound reduction in excise duty to assist people at the pumps on Tuesday.
