One of Cork City FC’s most famous players — George O’Callaghan — was formally arrested and charged on Wednesday with the theft of more than €23,000 from a fitness centre where he worked about five years ago. Detective Garda Robert McCarthy arrested George O’Callaghan, of Lisduff, Whitechurch, Co Cork,for the purpose of charging him on Wednesday at Cork District Court. Sergeant John Dineen said the Director of Public Prosecutions directed trial by indictment at Cork Circuit Criminal Court or the entry of a signed plea of guilty by the accused. The case was sent forward from Cork District Court for sentencing at Cork Circuit Criminal Court on February 9. George O’Callaghan’s football career included a five-year period with Cork City FC from 2002, and a spell in the UK at Ipswich Town.

On Tuesday, Government officials insisted the plans were always to be optional despite Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer saying people “will not be able to work in the United Kingdom” without a digital ID. On Wednesday, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said there will still have to be digital identification checks but the Government was “relaxed” about what was used, including an e-visa or e-passport, describing reports of a U-turn as “overwritten”. Here & Now: The Steps Musical is based on the songs of chart-topping pop group Steps and follows character Caz and her group of friends on their quest for a summer of love. She will join The Steps Musical cast members, including West End actresses Lara Denning and Jacqui Dubois, who play Caz and Vel respectively. The stage musical premiered in November 2024 and its UK tour began in August 2025. Matthews will join the tour of Here & Now: The Steps Musical on January 23rd for its performance at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre.
