The new year may have begun with a cold snap, but Ireland is coming off its second warmest year ever, bringing with it a heightened risk of severe weather events, Met Éireann has said. “The warming trend is very clear, with the last four years being the warmest four years on record in Ireland, since 1900,” Met Éireann climatologist Paul Moore said. And, the last four months of the year were very wet, with heavy rainfall events that led to widespread coastal and river flooding. 2025 has proven to be the busiest year on record at Ireland West Airport, with passenger numbers reaching 946,381 for the first time in the airport’s history, surpassing the previous record of 834,000 passengers set in 2024, a 13.5% increase, making it Ireland's fastest-growing airport last year. Ryanair recorded its busiest-ever year for passenger traffic at the airport, with record numbers using its services to Edinburgh, Liverpool, London Luton, Manchester, Faro and Malaga.
