An ongoing military investigation has determined that the United States is responsible for a deadly Tomahawk missile strike on an Iranian elementary school, according to U.S. officials and others familiar with the preliminary findings. The February 28th strike on the Shajarah Tayyebeh primary school building was the result of a targeting mistake by the US military, which was conducting strikes on an adjacent Iranian base of which the school building was formerly a part, the preliminary investigation found. Iranian officials have said the death toll was at least 175 people, most of them children. Officials briefed on the inquiry said the building was not always used as a school, though it is not clear precisely when the school opened on the site. Trump’s attempts to sidestep the blame have already complicated the military inquiry into the strike on an elementary school in Minab, Iran, leaving officials who have reviewed the findings showing U.S. culpability expressing unease.

Brokers say the US-Israeli war on Iran could set in train a series of events which will see mortgage rates “rising rather than falling”. Illustration: Paul ScottThe war in the Middle East could lead to a rise in interest on home loans, mortgage brokers have warned, after new data from the Central Bank showed rates were unchanged in January. I have a personal yardstick by which to measure how long it has been since the Irish Examiner broke news of the scandal of the chemical exposures suffered by Air Corps personnel. We had revealed that Air Corps personnel were not properly protected from the dangerous, carcinogenic, chemicals with which they worked in Casement Aerodrome. The response from the Defence Forces and government was to evade questions, delegate responsibility, and ultimately shrug their shoulders. The Air Corps allegations were added to the terms of reference of this tribunal — but jaded campaigners understandably believe they were only thrown in as an afterthought, benefitting from the larger outcry over a different scandal. The number of deaths campaigners attribute to the Air Corps’ failings has grown to well over one hundred now.
