Disruption to jet fuel supply is expected from “early May” if the US-Israel war on Iran continues beyond April, Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said on Wednesday, giving rise to fears the air fares could be about to skyrocket ahead of the summer. Jet fuel prices have roughly doubled in major markets since the onset of the war, driven by an effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 per cent of the world’s traded jet fuel supply normally passes. [ Jet fuel supply disruption expected, Ryanair chief saysOpens in new window ]Eoghan Corry, travel writer and owner of the TravelExtra trade magazine, said the price of jet fuel has climbed faster than the price of crude oil and airlines are “already getting milked for that”. International Energy Agency head Fatih Birol said on Wednesday the lack of jet fuel and diesel will hit Europe “in April or May”. Trump has in all likelihood correctly predicted the price of oil will shoot down when the Iran crisis comes to an end, and the same is likely true of jet fuel.

Limerick chief councillor, príomh chomhairleoir, Catherine Slattery said she has been “disrespected, demeaned, and intimidated” after Limerick mayor John Moran made a comment about her during a council meeting. Asked about the complaint made by Ms Slattery, a spokesperson for Limerick City and Council Council said: “Limerick City and County Council does not comment on matters related to the code of conduct.”

Manchester City and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has spoken out on his side's failure to qualify for yet another World Cup following their shock defeat, admitting he was reduced to tears following full-time. It means Italy are the first former winners to miss out on three consecutive tournaments, and that fact appears to have hit the squad hard - including Donnarumma. 'I cried because of the disappointment of not being able to bring Italy where it deserves to be. Donnarumma made his Italy debut at 16, but will now not play in a World Cup until he is at least 31. Having missed out on qualification for the World Cup in Qatar the year after, they looked to have bounced back at Euro 2024, making it out their group, until they were comfortably beaten by Switzerland in the round of 16.

Iran's military has insisted the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed to Tehran's 'enemies' as Donald Trump warned any truce in the war would depend on it reopening. The statement comes after Trump announced Iran's leadership is requesting a ceasefire - but warned that any truce is contingent on the Strait of Hormuz opening. Trump said Iran has asked for a ceasefire but one would only come when the Strait of Hormuz is 'open, free, and clear,' in a post published on his Truth Social platform. The new ceasefire claims comes hours before Trump is scheduled to give a televised address at 9pm ET (1am UK time) about the ongoing war. Follow the latest updates on the Iran war

The end of Dublin’s 14-year reign in Leinster has transformed the Leinster senior football championship, according to Louth’s winning captain last year Sam Mulroy. Dublin remain favourites to regain the Delaney Cup but not as convincing after Meath replaced them in Division 1 and Louth also came close to going up. “I suppose it has given everyone that little bit of a lift and everyone’s eyeing it up now. “Last year was massive for us to get across the line in such a big game as the Leinster final,” says Mulroy. “If there are enough strong players within group, I don't think it matters where the manager is from.

The current public sector deal expires in June. It’s a mixed bag but fewer than one in five private sector workers are unionised.

A liquefied natural gas terminal, such as the one in Zeebrugge, above, is a tricky issue politically here. We depend on the UK for our gas and it doesn’t hold a significant reserve either. The first bit of legislation – the Strategic Gas Emergency Reserve Bill 2025 – has started its journey through the Oireachtas. We need a reserve and we need access to diverse energy sources, including fracked gas if necessary. A far more productive question might be if the Government can bypass planning to fast-track an LNG terminal then why can’t it do the same for offshore wind farms?
