This, however, came as no surprise to Rooney, who revealed after the final whistle the conversation he had shared with Carrick in the build up to yesterday's clash. On Friday he watched Kai Rooney, one of Wayne's four sons, earn his first minutes as a United player at Old Trafford. Michael Carrick was there, Steve Holland, Jason Wilcox, all the coaches were there and so on, which you've heard me talking about a lot, that connection with the academy. That came after Roy Keane labelled suggestions there weren't 'bigger and better names' for Man United as 'silly'. For someone to say, "No matter what this person does, he doesn't deserve to be given the keys to be given the keys to Man United".

As soon as I arrived into Páirc Uí Chaoimh yesterday, I landed into a welter of excitement. The decibel levels were soaring in tandem with the Cork footballers’ late roll against Cavan. The crowd was certainly a help to the footballers late on. It’s only right that they could get a bounce from their own supporters when they needed it. Annual €130€80 Best value Monthly €12€6 / month

Two journalists from Italy’s state broadcaster RAI were threatened by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis while filming a report on rising tensions in the US under Donald Trump’s administration, sparking a political backlash in Italy. After realising they were being followed, the ICE agents stopped their vehicle and approached the car carrying the journalists. Despite the journalists identifying themselves as members of the press, the agents threatened to break the car window and drag the occupants out if they continued following and recording. Politicians from Italian opposition parties urged the government of prime minister Giorgia Meloni, who is ideologically aligned with Trump, to protect Italian citizens and condemn the intimidation. “Two Italian journalists have also been threatened by Trump’s political police,” said Peppe Provenzano, a politician with the centre-left Democratic Party.

Second, what should have been a pretty low wattage League opener for the All-Ireland champions turned into anything but. Had Clifford and Kennedy not retrieved the game for Kerry in the dying moments, it would have cost them two important League points for starters. For the moment, O’Connor and Kerry have more pressing matters, like a trip to Ballyshannon next Sunday to face the beaten All-Ireland finalists. Said O’Connor: “We had that game won a couple of times and we just kept turning the ball over. That's just not in our game plan at all.”On Donegal, he smiled: “Sure they’ve hit the ground running, like they always do.

Minister for State Robert Troy has agreed to meet a Cork County Council delegation to discuss how to provide flood insurance for hundreds of homeowners in the region who have lost it following Storm Babet. In a letter to the council Mr Troy said that while the Government will put €1.3bn into flood defence schemes around the country between now and 2030, it recognises that the availability of flood insurance is a significant issue for many communities. Picture: Cork County CouncilHe said the Government wants to develop a long-term strategic approach to the flood insurance gap and officials in the Department of Finance have been engaging extensively with Insurance Ireland about this. The Mayor of County Cork Mary Linehan-Foley said the council’s general purposes committee will prepare suggestions in advance of meeting Mr Troy and his officials. However, one previous suggestion by Ms Ahern that the Government adopt a similar approach to that in Britain seems to have been ruled out by Mr Troy.

Dublin’s seven-time All-Ireland SFC winning defender John Small says the 50-metre advancement rule is unfair and has also questioned the application of it. “I don't like the idea of the defender having to handing back the ball because he’s then caught out of position. “And now the fouled players are starting to deceive the referees and get 50m penalties, which are huge penalties. “He's looking after the forwards in there, so I think Dublin will have a really innovative sort of idea of how they want to play. “We actually took a lot of shots in the games but we missed a lot,” admits Small.

She and her husband had seen Hamnet the night before. I had barely taken my coat off when the unfiltered review of the movie I had just seen came right out of my mouth. I did not cry when young Hamnet finally expired – although, judging by the nose-blowing around me, some people certainly did. Many people who love Hamnet have indeed felt just this way after watching it. As Shakespeare wrote in his most famous monologue, which Mescal quotes in full in Hamnet, “To be, or not to be, that is the question.”

In 2015, Met Éireann and the UK Met Office launched a scheme inviting the public to suggest names for storms, to raise awareness of the dangers of severe weather. Met Éireann and the Met Office were joined in the naming scheme by the Netherlands' meteorological agency KNMI in 2019. Named storms are often expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain that could lead to flooding, or significant snowfall. For the 2025/26 storm season, Met Éireann called on Ireland’s public to submit their preferred names through a social media campaign. Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium and Luxembourg work together to name storms in south-western Europe, while Norway, Sweden and Denmark agree names for storms in the north of the continent.

Dublin Bus is offering €15,000 for ideas from members of the public on how to improve the bus system. Dublin’s public transport dysfunction has been diagnosed exhaustively for years. In London in the mid-2000s, and Stockholm a few years earlier, congestion pricing was introduced at a later stage in the reform process. Then, once reliability is somewhat achieved, introduce congestion pricing as a reinforcement rather than a punishment. It needs a city willing to decide, in practice rather than through competitions, to give public transport the right of way.
