By VINCENT OWINO More by this AuthorFacebook owner Meta has finally rolled out features that will allow content creators on its platform in Kenya to earn revenue from short-form videos through advertising, the social network has announced. Kenya is now one of 12 African countries where Meta shares ad revenue with creators. The journey to extend Meta's monetisation capabilities to Kenya began in March when Meta's President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, visited the country and met with President William Ruto. The plan was to roll out the features on both Facebook and Instagram by June, but Instagram creators may have to wait longer as Meta has only announced monetisation on Facebook. In a fresh push to get the government to hear their demands, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is considering rallying its members to down their tools just before schools reopen for third term. Speaking at the Union’s offices on August 6, 2024, KNUT Secretary General, Collins Oyuu explained that the second phase of the 2021 – 2025 Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA) they signed had not yet been implemented. “We have written to the TSC, this leads to industrial action which might not be escaped in any way,” Oyuu noted. As part of the requirement to call for a legal industrial action, the KNUT has issued a strike notice to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour. Should the talks bear no fruits, KNUT will invite the national executive council for a ratification for a go ahead for a nation-wide strike.

Globally recognised for its ability to provide stable, low-carbon electricity, nuclear energy presents a compelling solution for Kenya's growing power needs. Nuclear power, characterised by its high energy output and reliability, could serve as a cornerstone in energising these initiatives. Few subjects attract as much global attention as nuclear energy, due to concerns over nuclear weapons proliferation and the potential for transboundary radiological contamination. Overall, promoting a robust safety culture is critical for the successful implementation of a nuclear power program. While nuclear energy offers a promising solution to the country's energy challenges, it is imperative to balance energy needs with environmental protection and public trust.

Kamala Harris picks Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as running mateDemocratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to be her running mate on Tuesday, choosing a progressive policy champion and a plain speaker from America’s heartland to help win over rural, white voters, said people familiar with the matter. Harris and Walz will face Trump and his running mate JD Vance, also a military veteran from the Midwest, in a Nov. 5 election. That approach has struck a chord with the young voters Harris needs to reengage. In the 2022 governor’s race, Walz won with 52.27% to his Republican opponent’s 44.61%, although swaths of rural Minnesota voted for the opponent. During that campaign, Walz touted the backing of several influential labor unions, including the state AFL-CIO, firefighters, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), teachers and others.

Legal disputes between states are filed directly to the Supreme Court.
