Kenya, alongside Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia, is set to benefit from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa's (COMESA) initiative aimed at reducing post-harvest losses in the horticulture sector. The initiative, which acknowledges the horticulture sub-sector's post-harvest losses of up to 60%, aims to lower these losses to 40% or below within five years. The programme focuses on the modernization of horticulture value chains across East Africa, targeting key crops such as potatoes, avocados, and onions. This effort is expected to significantly boost global exports from the current $416 million to $950 million over the next seven years. CEHA regional coordinator, Apollo Owuor, stressed the importance of addressing post-harvest losses through the adoption of existing technologies in storage and transport.

Biden has also targeted coal power plants with tough new rules requiring them to almost eliminate all their carbon dioxide output in the 2030s using carbon capture technology or shut down altogether. The Group of Seven countries last month likewise set a time limit for phasing out coal-fired power plants in the middle of the next decade. It won't affect current coal leases in the region, which spans southeast Montana and northeast Wyoming.

Amid all the bad, sad news of the last year or so with regard to Africa’s LGBTQ community, there have been a few, quiet, small wins that may have gone unnoticed by the majority. For me, this was amazing news, considering that long before the advent of social media, blackmail and extortion were a major feature affecting the lives of Kenya's LGBTQ+ community. This forced many members of the community to remain in the shadows for fear of being their true selves. I will, however, tell you why one of a few attempts to blackmail or extort me in those days failed. This newfound willingness and courage to confront blackmailers and extortionists before the law counts as a win in my book.
