Photo by CHIP SOMODEVILLA/GETTY IMAGESProfessor Greg Germain of Syracuse University Law predicts that the judge in Donald Trump's fraud trial will shape his decision to prevent a successful appeal. Judge Engoron will attempt to include examples of Trump's behaviour in which all elements of fraud are present, despite the victims' lack of evidence of reasonable reliance on Trump's financial statements. Engoron has previously stated that he does not want to give Trump any grounds for a successful appeal. In the Letitia James, the New York Attorney General, case, Engoron issued a partial summary judgement in September, concluding that Trump and top Trump Organisation executives had committed fraud. To get out of being punished, Trump's appeal will have to question the usual parts of fraud.

Imagine you ran a political party that needed every vote it could get in a forthcoming election. But then one of your candidates, who would ordinarily attract many voters, got caught up in a sexual misconduct complaint from a party member. In South Africa recently, one of the smaller political parties nationally, has taken the third option outlined above, and as it could end up being for them, they have stuck by their guns on an issue of integrity. The Good Party, founded in 2018 by veteran politician and former mayor of Cape Town Patricia De Lille, has recently summarily suspended popular retired rugby coach Peter de Villiers from all party activities after receiving a complaint of sexual misconduct from a party member. We have miles to go in the integrity space as far as such advances are concerned.
