DELIVERING A POIGNANT speech in observance of Law Day recently, in the Conference Hall of the Ministerial Complex, Congo Town, Cllr. I make the same appeal to the European Union on this Law Day. Crimes are at an all-time high, theft of state resources continue to rise as more and more Liberians languish at the bottom of the economic ladder. ALL THIS AS Liberia continues to decline in the fight against corruption. Liberia now ranks 137/180 and sits further down the table compared to its 2018 rank of 120/180.

Since the unfortunate incident, nearly US$40M has been budgeted by the past and current governments for the Executive Mansion renovation. When quizzed who should be held liable for the prolong delay in the completion of the Executive Mansion renovation works, Mr. Johnson stated: “You must hold Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf responsible. Monies were put up for the Executive Mansion renovation and they were squandered. Months later, the GAC in its findings, observed a waste of over US$10M on the Executive Mansion renovation project. Since his pronouncement, not enough has been done to ensure that millions of dollars budgeted for the Executive Mansion renovation works are accounted for.

I have always held that we lost an important opportunity to hold accountable those responsible for the mayhem of the Liberian civil war. It had all the goodwill and the largest UN Peacekeeping operations in the world stationed to safeguard the process of a war crimes tribunal. Unfortunately, the Sirleaf Administration took a hostile position towards the findings and implementation of the TRC recommendations. Those who supported the Sirleaf Administration even when it outrightly rejected the push for a war crimes tribunal, are now advocating for a war crimes tribunal. Make no mistake, I grew during the civil war and like most Liberians kids felt the worst of the conflict.

For our country, holding free, fair and credible elections, on time, is amongst the best ways to continue to keep our peace, and remain democratic. It is such an important duty for governments that every responsible government makes planning for, and support to elections, a major priority. However, time and again, under this George Weah-led government, we have to postpone elections and delay by-elections because the government says it has no money for elections. This way, we keep the business of electoral protests under NEC, as the Constitution instructs, but free up the NEC Commissioners to concentrate on the other business of the elections. It has the same people against whom some of the protests are actually being brought to hear and decide it.

Codenamed “witness 7” the former RUF commander echoed the testimony of previous witnesses testifying to the court in Freetown that Massaquoi could not have been in Liberia when dozens of Liberian witnesses said he committed atrocities. Like previous witnesses, “7” denied knowing Massaquoi had ever fought in Liberia and said the witnesses in Liberia who accused Massaquoi of atrocities including murder, rape and torture, were lying against an innocent man. Witness 7 was the latest of 19 witnesses who will testify on Massaquoi’s behalf in the Sierra Leone sessions of the trial. The defense contends Massaquoi was under witness protection in Freetown when the witnesses said he committed crimes in Liberia and could not have traveled to Liberia. I am grieving in a way that has never been the case. The religious way of grieving is predicated on the premise that the dead are in a better place; the dead have gone to heaven or paradise where is no suffering or pain. That people are grieving does not mean that they suspend their sense of reasoning or rational judgment. I deem it immoral to lie to those who are grieving or to peddle falsehoods about the dead. Why should people lie to one’s face or lie to the face of the dead because one is mourning or grieving?
