BARCLAY TRAINING CENTER – The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) High Command has relievedLieutenant Colonel Nyankun E. Williams of his post as Commandant of the Armed Forces Training Command (AFTC) on allegation of rape. The AFL High Command has forwarded Lieutenant Colonel Williams to the Military Police to face investigation. The Military Police will conclude said investigation on 10 May 2021, and submit its findings to the AFL High Command for further actions. Meanwhile, Sergeant Obento Roberts has been recalled from the peacekeeping mission to aid the Military Police in the investigation. The AFL High Command assures the public that all recommendations emanating from the investigation will be fully executed.

The project is being implemented in line with the framework of the Nation Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS II). It is developed by LISGIS with the help of development partners covering the period of 2017-2021. Monrovia – Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) with funding from the World Bank has launched the Harmonizing and Improving Statistics in West Africa (HISWA) Liberia Project to promote development in the country. For the next five years, LISGIS will serve as the primary beneficiary of the HISWA project activities. The project is being implemented in line with the framework of the Nation Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS II).

Monrovia – The Ministry of Labour has announced a prohibition of foreigners working as Cashier Supervisors in Supermarkets in and outside of Monrovia. According a Labour Ministry Press Release, the Ministry decision follows a meeting held on the 15th of April 2021 at the Ministry of Labour with the management of Major Supermarkets operating in the country. The Ministry of Labour said it has no record of approving Work Permit for foreigners to serve as Casher Supervisor in Supermarkets in Liberia. Consequence thereof, as of May 31, 2021, no foreigner should serve as Casher Supervisors or preform such task in supermarkets in and outside of Monrovia. Failure to adhere to this instruction, the Ministry of Labour will be constrained to summarily revoke the violator’s Work Permit and impose the requisite fines on the supermarket management.

RecommendationsThe GAC recommended that the Customs Department of the Liberia Revenue Authority ensures cargo clearance processes is streamlined to enable importers receive their goods within the minimum time requires;That the LRA significantly review the customs cargo clearance processes and align interagency mandate to avoid replicated customs cargo clearance process.

The 2021 National County Meet highest goal scorer made it 2-0 for Liberia from a Frederick Dennis assist against Sierra Leone in the final match of the Mano River Union Football Peace Tournament. The tournament should have been played amongst four countries but Ivory Coast and Guinea at the last minute to the tournament pulled out. In 2005, Massaquoi was granted immunity from prosecution for crimes in Sierra Leone in return for his testimony in the war crimes trials in Sierra Leone. Massaquoi’s trial began on February 1 in the city of Tampere, where he had been living.

Monrovia – The Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation (BCR) has confiscated over L$2 million worth of narcotics from inmates at the Monrovia Central Prison in Monrovia. The drugs were confiscated from inmates during the BCR’s vigorous search and lockdown exercise at the various prison facilities in the country. “We can assure you that in the shortest possible time, we will have a robust drugs law to ensure that we succeed because we notice that the traffickers take advantage of the drugs law, the weakness of the drugs law, and the poorer borders.”Zehyoue:” Once we have a robust drugs law, the traffickers will be prosecuted, and given maximum sentences. So, we want to amend some provisions within the drugs law because the current drugs law is bailable, but we want the law to be nonbailable. The existing drugs law is impeding our work because it is bailable.”
