Monrovia – Eleven Ghanaian ‘illegal gold and diamond miners’ have been arrested in Bong County by a joint operation comprising the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Ministry of Mines and Energy. The accused illegal miners were handcuffed and made to line up on Friday at the Ministry of Mines and Energy and later turned over to the Ministry of Justice for further investigation and prosecution. The men, he added, do not have any residential document and were arrested at two locations in Bong County called samba and Wologbah. He called for sustained collective effort among the relevant agencies including the Liberia Immigration Services (LIS) and the Ministry of Justice to stop illicit mining across the country. Currently, the forests and waters across the country are inundated with illicit miners, mostly foreigners with mining equipment like dredges and other harmful substances in search of these valuable resources.

“We need to handle this issue of rape holistically and not by various groups in different ministries and agencies. Further unveiling the rights group’s intent, Togbah said the establishment of an independent anti-rape commission for Liberia, will help fast track all matters pertaining to rape in the country. “It is because of this that FOHRD believes that a commission is needed to be established to handle rape cases holistically,” he added. “It’s important for FOHRD to ascertain how civil society organizations and human rights groups feel about having a commission that will only handle rape matters,” Togbah said. This is an indication that the passport scandal could taint the international image of Liberia and ECOWAS in general. It should also be noted that this communication is in no way intended to impugn the integrity of those who have been implicated in the passport scandal by the former Liberian passport director. MONROVIA – The Liberia Medicines & Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) and several stakeholders of the LMHRA held a one-day meeting aimed at brainstorming on strategy and galvanizing resources to build an Internationally Certified Quality Control Laboratory (QCL) to ensure the general public has access to safe, effective and quality medicines. In 2010, the LMHRA Act was passed by the Legislature and approved by the President of Liberia seeking to ensure that the law provides for quality assurance through laboratory testing. Hence, a 3-year strategic plan was developed in 2013 providing for a 4-unit (physio-chemical, medical device, microbiology and cosmetics) QC laboratory. These, which include, an internationally certified and fully equipped functioning QC lab, logistics (mainly vehicles, amongst others) for inspection and Post Market Surveillance (PMS), trainings, recruitment and retention of staff, etc. She noted that if, the LMHRA QC laboratory is WHO-prequalified or ISO 17025-accredited, and then it can be used to perform QC testing of grant-funded products and increased confidence in the quality of work performed by LMHRA QC Laboratory.
