Libya’s Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) stepped up drone strikes on Friday against what it said were “smuggling gangs” in western regions, attacking targets in Zawia, Zuwara, Ajeelat and Maya. The Parliament said this week the drone strikes were aimed at “settling political scores”, saying one had targeted the home of a parliament member. Dbeibah has described the drones carrying out the attacks as Libyan although the GNU was not known to possess any. Control over the city has been repeatedly contested over recent years, including by groups that back and oppose Dbeibah. The United States and other Western countries have voiced concern at the use of weapons in civilian areas of Zawia and urged leaders to calm the situation.

With the third round of the French Open underway in Paris, there is not a single player from the home country left in either singles bracket for the locals to cheer. No one to serenade with “La Marseillaise,” the national anthem, or encourage with yells of “Allez!” That’s because all 29 players from France — 10 women, 19 men — in the singles fields already were gone. This is the second time in three years with zero women or men from France still around after just two rounds (it takes seven victories to earn a title). Until 2021, that hadn’t happened even once since the dawn of the sport’s Open era in 1968.

Forces of Libya’s Tripoli-based government launched drone strikes against suspected smuggling sites in the country’s west Friday as they pursued a campaign begun over a week ago, local media reported. “Strikes targeted Zuwara” some 120 kilometres (75 miles) west of the capital near the border with Tunisia, broadcaster Libya al-Ahrar reported. It said “seven migrant smuggling boats, six drug trafficking depots… and nine tanker trucks used for fuel smuggling” had been destroyed. Armed groups have exploited the turmoil to fund their activities through fuel smuggling and the illegal trafficking of migrants. The current operation has so far been limited to drone strikes.
