Libya has suggested forming a joint commission with Bangladesh to identify major areas of cooperation between the two countries. Newly appointed Libyan Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdulmutalib S M Suliman put forward the suggestion when he met Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen at the latter's office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday. Momen underlined the importance of continued cooperation in different sectors of mutual interest including promotion of trade and investment between Bangladesh and Libya. The Chairman of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, discussed on Wednesday with the UN envoy and Head of UNSMIL, Abdoulaye Bathily, in Tripoli, the electoral process, including ways to strengthen efforts to hold elections. The two sides also reviewed international technical support through the bodies of the UN, led by the United Nations Development Program, for HNEC, touching upon the challenges facing progress in the field of cooperation, the readiness of the HNEC to implement electoral processes, and the time required for each process. They also discussed the electoral processes implemented by the HNEC since its establishment, and the lessons learned in order to advance the HNEC's work toward internationally recognized standards and principles. During the meeting, Al-Sayeh briefed the UN envoy on the plans and procedures of the HNEC, its administrative and technical structure, and its capabilities to carry out its tasks. The UN envoy, meanwhile, stressed the continued support of the mission and the international community in general for Libya's elections, encouraging the HNEC to continue working on achieving the aspirations of Libyans in holding free and fair elections that will result in legitimate institutions in the country.

October 20, 2011 On this day in 2011, Muammar Gaddafi, then longest-serving leader in Africa and the Arab world, was captured and killed by rebel forces near his hometown of Sirte. After more than 40 years in power, Gaddafi saw his regime begin to unravel in February 2011, when anti-government protests broke out in Libya following the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia earlier that year. Gaddafi vowed to crush the revolt and ordered a violent crackdown against the demonstrators. However, by August, rebel forces, with assistance from Nato, had gained control of Tripoli and established a transitional government. Gaddafi went into hiding, but on October 20, 2011, he was captured and shot by rebel forces.

Representatives of western powers as well as Egypt and Turkey will convene a “technical” meeting to discuss the Libyan crisis from October 26th until 28th, Italian news agency Nova reports. Citing unnamed Libyan sources, Nova stated that the meeting will be attended by the special envoys of three Western members of the U.N. Security Council with the right of veto, namely France, the United Kingdom and the United States. Another two European nations most involved in the Libyan dossier, Italy and Germany, will be present in the meeting alongside Turkey and Egypt. The only name Nova confirmed to be in the attendance is Italy’s Special Envoy to Libya Nicola Orlando.

CAIRO - 19 October 2022:Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit expressed his confidence that Abdoulaye Bathily, the United Nations Special Representative for Libya and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), will proceed with regional and international efforts to get Libya out of the current political stalemate through agreeing a legal and constitutional base for holding the national elections. He made the remarks on Wednesday during a phone call with Bathily in which he greeted the latter for assuming his post. Abul Gheit discussed with Bathily the latest developments in Libya and agreed on continued consultations between the Arab League and the UN to restore stability to Libya. The two sides also stressed that effective Libyan players would heed national interests and resorting to dialogue to reach a settlement to the current crisis.
