Anchor and TBWA\New Zealand have reimagined what the world would be like without milk to remind Kiwis to celebrate World Milk Day. Anchor’s new ads shows what a melancholy place a milk-less world would be: committing cookie sacrilege by dipping delicious biscuits into tall glasses of water, starting the day off with bowls of water-soaked cereal, and causing grumpy cats everywhere to get even grumpier with Anchor’s Zero Lacto milk nowhere in sight. These dystopian, devoid-of-dairy scenes coupled with the simple statement: “Thank Goodness for Milk” to remind viewers to remember the pivotal role milk plays. These visual reminders of life without our beloved milk were a perfect way to celebrate World Milk Day, on June 1st, 2024. Happy World Milk Day!

Alex Young and his fiancée bought their West Auckland property at the height of the market in late 2021. Young fears the bank will recall the home loan, which will put him into bankruptcy, on top of losing his home. Chair of community group, West Auckland Is Flooding, Lyall Carter estimates there are around 10-15 homeowners in urban West Auckland who will find themselves in a negative equity position after the buyout process is complete. Auckland Council's group recovery manager, Mat Tucker, said the recovery office is aware of people in hundreds of different situations.

Photo: RNZ/Niva ChittockCanterbury's Selwyn district has been crowned the country's fastest-growing area in the latest census data. One couple had recently moved from Christchurch to Selwyn's biggest town, Rolleston. The couple said they loved their new community, but had found the rapid influx of people was causing some friction locally. No new land had been zoned for urban residential properties in the 2024 Selwyn Long Term Plan, he said. But on the whole, everyone RNZ spoke to raved about living in Selwyn - with one small caveat.

When Ian Fraser Grant received an email several weeks ago from the Prime Minister’s Department about being made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, his initial thought was that it was “a clever scam”, although feeling “a little humbled” swiftly followed. “We have absolutely no idea who was responsible for the nomination, but I do know, having been involved in nominating other people, that there’s quite a lot of time and effort involved,” he told the Times-Age. He’s also published more than 170 books, most of them with his wife Diane since they founded Fraser Books in 1984. The Alexander Turnbull Library’s inaugural Adjunct Scholar in 2014, Grant has also held residencies at the Stout Centre for New Zealand Studies and was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2012 Media Awards. He is a Life Member of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs and received a Masterton Civic Award in 2020.

Dunedin antique dealer and restorer Ray Paul might be soon closing the doors of Princes St business Anderson & Paul but, as he puts it, he’s "not retiring from life". Mr Paul, 67, worked in partnership with Geoffrey Anderson until Mr Anderson’s death last year. Mr Anderson did a lot of the repair work while Mr Paul tended to do the cleanup of the furniture, colour matching and waxing. A lot of stuff in the shop had already been sold and he was having a sale to clear the remaining items. While there were downsides to being self-employed, Mr Paul felt "extremely blessed and lucky" to have been able to do what he loved, supported by his family.

For Fabric-a-brac founder Josie Brennan, her dad’s hospice respites were “a breath of fresh, caring air” from harrowing hospitalisations. For the hospice table, we’ve a couple of bags from a retired Hawke’s Bay farmer whose hotwater tank blew, drenching sheets crimson courtesy of her bridge cloth. Old friendships are renewed, vintage fabric revisited. Textiles, as the late Aotearoa quilt artist Malcolm Harrison maintained, are loaded with emotion from the moment of their creation. “You stitch your feelings into your work.” And that’s even before the garment is put to use and memories begin to infuse the fabric.

By Erin Johnson ofPhoto: PHILIP WHITEHEAD / SUPPLIEDAucklander Philip Whitehead had expected to be home from a trip to England by now, instead he's stuck in a Thai hospital. Whitehead's neck and back were broken when his Singapore Airlines flight from London hit extreme turbulence in May. "I woke up on the floor of the aisle of the plane with a severely lacerated head, broken neck, broken back, cracked sternum, and a damaged lung." The pilot diverted the flight to Bangkok, with 23 New Zealanders among the 211 passengers, and Whitehead was admitted to surgery straight away. There is a game show on TV ONE called The Chase which I’m sure many of you will have seen. What we need to learn is to pushback against some of the things Luxon’s Coalition Government is getting wrong through protests and select committee hearings. A good example is the pushback on David Seymour’s attack on the School Lunches programme. There’s a March For Nature and Against The Fast Track Legislation planned for this coming Saturday June 8thin Auckland’s Aotea Square starting at 1pm. Bryan Bruce is one of New Zealand’s most important and respected documentary makers.

Three young friends, including a couple, were filmed in a heartbreaking final embrace before they were swept away by flash floods in northern Italy. Patrizia Cormos, 20, her friend Bianca Doros, 23, and her boyfriend Cristian Molnar, 25, had decided to take a stroll along the Natisone River near Udine in the northern Friuli region when the river surged to dangerous levels after days of torrential rain. The two women and man, all aged in their 20s, were last seen alive on Friday standing thigh deep in the swirling river water on a tiny island they walked to in the middle of the river. Video shared from the scene as rescue efforts were underway showed the trio hugging each other as they remained trapped in the rising torrent unable to reach the riverbank.

One way to do it is to buy more than one service from a provider: you go for a bundle offer. And then you pay GST on top. That’s almost as much as three gas bills before Frank Energy hiked the daily charge and seems like Turkish and Argentinian level inflation. Of that, $33.12 was for actual gas usage which is reasonable, and $73.90 for the daily charge which is a lot. While they may seem attractive initially, service bundle plans aren’t necessarily in the best interest of consumers.
