National’s coalition agreement with New Zealand First committed to “moderate increases to the minimum wage every year” while the Act Party campaigned on freezing the minimum wage. Cabinet's decision to increase the minimum wage less than inflation effectively lowers the base rate in inflation adjusted terms. “I believe such a rate is appropriate given the current economic conditions and the historically large increases to the minimum wage (relative to inflation) that have distorted relativities”. In a 2023 review of the minimum wage, which informed the Cabinet decision, MBIE said the wage “would likely” need to be at $23.60 or higher to “approximately maintain the current real-value of the minimum wage”. Van Velden said a new minimum wage would be set every year but “not necessarily at the rate of inflation”.

"The disaster victim identification unit finished their assessment late this afternoon and found the drivers were the only people in the vehicles," he said. Russ earlier told Newshub the northbound vehicle crossed the centre line and collided head-on with the southbound car. The northbound car then caught fire and was "fully engulfed" by the time emergency services arrived at the scene, he said. "These are the ones you never forget, they're horrible ones for all emergency services," Russ said of the crash.

According to the Registrar-General, names that are also official titles or ranks, or names that sound like one, are most likely to be blocked from use, Stuff.co.nz reported. ‘Prince’ was the name the country’s Department of Internal Affairs declined the most last year, with five rejections. Parents tried to spell it other ways, such as ‘Prynce’ or ‘Pryncè’, but they too were nay-sayed. King was, as usual near the top of the list, as well as other title-related names such as Bishop, King, Major, Royal, Messiah, Princess, Royale, and Sovereign. Australia has similar rules around naming babies, with official titles and ranks also banned here.
