An expected quarterly rise in our unemployment rate. Stats NZ data shows it's at 3.9% for the three months to September, up from 3.6% last quarter, and 3.2% a year ago. NZ Herald Business Editor, Liam Dann, told Tim Beveridge that while unemployment going up isn’t generally considered a good thing, a bit of “slack” in the labour market is needed to help combat inflation. He said that 3.9% is still, historically, very low. LISTEN ABOVE

Stuff has introduced Stuff Shorts stories, which will be presented in a vertical video format and will feature daily on New Zealand’s largest digital news platform, starting today. Stuff Shorts includes breaking and live news, explainers, audio, Stuff quizzes and polls, as well as travel, home and food inspiration. Stuff is the only news platform in New Zealand delivering this new technology, with this format championed by many social platforms. Global research shows four out of five (82.5 percent) mobile phone users use their phones in portrait orientation, and that two-thirds (65 percent) of devices remain in that vertical orientation during an ad presentation. Matt Headland, Managing Director of Brand Connections, says brands can elevate their digital advertising within Stuff Shorts formats.

Sir Peter Jackson has stepped into the world of directing music videos for the first time, directing the video for The Beatles’ final song. The track, called Now And Then, will be available Thursday, November 2, as part of a single paired with Love Me Do, the very first Beatles single that came out in 1962 in England. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison worked on Now And Then in the same sessions, but technological limitations stood in the way. “Just thinking about the responsibility of having to make a music video worthy of the last song The Beatles will ever release produced a collection of anxieties almost too overwhelming to deal with,” Jackson said. May I point out that the last Weekender insert featured an imagined mega-thrust tsunami that is the stuff of Hollywood disaster movies. Comparing the wave pictured with Tuamotu Island (36 metres high), Young Nick’s Head (177 metres) and the distant shore hills, this monster would have to be an absurd several kilometres high! Recent scientific studies have estimated the height of a magnitude 9 mega-thrust tsunami to be anywhere between 12m and 30m. The article itself seem liked another handout from council, patting itself on the back for its new civil defence building and its exercise. Information on what the public could do in such an event would have been relevant — but if a 30-metre tsunami wave rolls in, even the new Civil Defence building at Lytton will not be safe.

In February, Cyclone Gabrielle caused the Ngaruroro River in the eastern North Island to burst its banks. Consequently, it smashed through Riverside Cherries’ 10-hectare apple orchard, also affecting 7 hectares of cherry trees. The Twyford business lost all the apple trees and half a hectare of cherries. What we lost, we replanted in young trees, then we had to start the big job of repairing our cages. They were completely washed away and broken, so that’s seven hectares of netting, so it was quite a job.

against Welsh, speculation on the next Wallaby coach, World Cup referee abuse and pure class from South Africa. Last year Polly and their children were the target of threats after he officiated South Africa’s defeat by France. If you had that there would be substantially more penalties and free kicks – do fans really want that? Referees are not above criticism but the automatic blaming and abusing of referees appears to be a developing trend amongst rugby fans, and it is not one that will lead anywhere good. RSA Government declares ‘the Webb Ellis is in South Africa’s kant’(Photo 2 October 2021 by Stephen Tremain)The Guardian reports that the South African government has declared that “the Webb Ellis is in South Africa’s kant” after the Biltong-eaters beat the flock-botherers on Sunday morning (proper time).

In This Story: White IslandThe volcanic island Whakaari / White Island in New Zealand’s northeastern Bay of Plenty region explosively erupted on 9 December 2019 at 14:11 NZDT (01:11 UTC). Twenty-two people were killed, including two who are missing and declared dead, and a further 25 people suffered injuries, many of whom suffered severe burns. The ongoing seismic and volcanic activity in the area as well as heavy rainfall, low visibility and toxic gases hampered recovery efforts over the week following the incident. On 30 November, it was reported that WorkSafe New Zealand had filed charges against 13 parties over the Whakaari eruption including GNS Science, the National Emergency Management Agency, and tour operators Volcanic Air and the Ngāti Awa–owned White Island Tours. 3 Recent Items: White Island

WELLINGTON: The New Zealand firm that managed a volcanic island which erupted killing 22 people in 2019, was on Tuesday found guilty of failing to adequately protect visitors. A court in Auckland found Whakaari Management failed to “assess risk” to visitors sufficiently or provide them with protective equipment. The management company was the last of 13 individuals and organisations originally charged over the disaster. Whakaari Management — which granted permits to visit the island — will be sentenced next February with six other parties who pleaded guilty. The guilty parties face fines of up to NZ$1.5 million (US$876,652).

They left bitter and hateful towards the Left and their dark treasonous treacle oozed into the dark spaces with demented energy. After handing so much culture war ammunition to the Right, our woke middle class identity activists literally drove male voters into the arms of the political right. We have not calculated the full political price yet of this culture war. The problem with Cancel Culture for the Left is that after the woke have cancelled everyone, who votes for us? This political marriage of convenience between ACT, National and NZ First is a union of grievance and malice aided by culture war ammunition the Left couldn’t win.

In the current circumstances, they have a very sanguine outlook - with the usual caveats about unexpected shocks. 57 kids in seven years: Our shocking child death tollAt least 50 children have been killed since Oranga Tamariki was created – and half of them had a record with the agency before they died. The reality is that the 57 dead children killed by whanau since Oranga Tamariki took over is a perfectly acceptable price to pay for most NZers to underfund our social services! Our underfunded social services that prefer to contract out wrap around services to NGOs are a weeping wound that burns our society but we point blank refuse to fund them properly by taxing the rich! Oranga Tamariki is a Frankenstein monster, a neoliberal welfare experiment conjured up by Bill English and big data. TDB Recommends NewzEngine.com Oranga Tamariki has always been about saving the State money and the welfare of the child is secondary to that!
