TV star Noel Edmonds told the developer of a cycle trail close to his home in New Zealand “you are the enemy” in a bizarre rant unleashed earlier this year during a meeting on his estate there. The news website’s journalists Tony Wall and Amy Ridout have been investigating Edmonds’ property purchases which have attracted some local opposition since he moved there last year. In August, Belinda Crisp, who manages the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust, visited Edmonds’ River Haven estate to meet the former Saturday Swap Shop and Noel’s House Party host at his café there. “He started saying how dangerous [the cycle trail] was, there had been no consultation with the community, the entire community was up in arms,” she says. But in response to questions from the reporters at Stuff.co.nz, he likened them, as well as the cycle trail manager, to officials in Germany under the Third Reich.

One man is in a critical condition following a serious assault at a property in Otatara, Invercargill. Police were called to a private property in Dunns Rd, Otatara, at about 7am today after reports that a man had been stabbed, a police spokesman said. He was flown to Dunedin Hospital and remains in a critical condition. A 23-year-old woman was taken into custody and has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, the spokesman said. A scene guard remains in place until at least tomorrow while a scene examination takes place.

Today is the annual observance of Te Pūtake o te Riri – He Rā Maumahara, the National Day of Commemoration for the New Zealand Wars. The New Zealand Wars took place between 1845 and 1872, with a series of skirmishes and battles at various sites around the North Island. In Tauranga, where the commemorations this year are being held, local New Zealand Wars historian Buddy Mikaere (Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāti Ranginui) says more people than ever are taking an interest in the wars. “One is that huge numbers of New Zealanders were denied an awareness of New Zealand history in their school years, or if they did learn anything about New Zealand history, it was a rose-tinted version of it. He also hopes in the future the official day of commemoration for the New Zealand Wars could become somewhat akin to Anzac Day in the consciousness of the New Zealand public.

The Rugby World Cup final is underway as fans descend from across the world to witness history being made at Stade de France in Paris. A record fourth global title for the Springboks by the barest of margins after a controversy and card filled World Cup final. A rumble in the Paris rain gave way to a gripping second half epic as the All Blacks refused to surrender. Kolisi’s head clattered into Savea’s to earn him a yellow card that should have resulted in two captains being sent off in a World Cup final. While it will never win any beauty contests, the Boks once again proved their style is built for World Cup success.

The new owners of the Nugget Point Hotel have plans for an extensive refurbishment, to bring the property up to a five-star-plus standard, over the next year. PHOTO: SUPPLIEDQueenstown's Nugget Point Hotel has sold for just over $20 million to Singapore-New Zealand buyer New Bay Group. Bayleys investment sales director Paul Dixon said the "ground-breaking" resort was "ahead of its time" when it was built in the 1980s. New Bay Group, which also owns hotels in Auckland, Wellington and Tauranga, has committed to an extensive refurbishment, which will restore Nugget Point to a five-star-plus standard over the next year. The hotel will be operated by experienced New Zealand company Capstone Hotel Management, which manages about 14 properties across the country.
