The economy grew 0.9 per cent in the second quarter, lifting the country out of recession and exceeding expectations. In fact, based on revisions to earlier numbers, the economy may not have been in a technical recession at all. Economists had forecast New Zealand would rebound back into growth in the second quarter of the year. Estimates for June quarter GDP (gross domestic product) ranged from growth of 0.4 per cent to growth of 0.8 per cent. But higher dairy, forestry, and meat exports helped drive the growth of 0.9 per cent in the second quarter.

PHOTO: NZ HERALDThe economy has posted stronger than expected growth in the second quarter as service industries and manufacturing lifted activity. The previous quarter's GDP figure was revised to zero from the previous 0.1-percent fall. Service industries, which make up two thirds of the economy, generally drove the increase, although household spending was soft. Labour Party finance spokesperson Grant Robertson said the GDP figures showed New Zealand's economy was resilient. "I think it is likely there will be sort of slow, very, very slow anaemic positive growth second quarter, the June quarter.

Essentially they are signaling that rates will stay elevated well into 2024 with fewer projected cuts. Somewhat surprisingly, American mortgage applications jumped +5.4% last week, the first rise in three weeks, and the biggest since mid-June. In Germany, fast-retreating energy costs are allowing producer price inflation to cool fast. British CPI inflation fell marginally to +6.7% in August from +6.8% in July, and this was lower than the expected +7.0% rate. The bitcoin price has barely moved from this time yesterday, and is now at US$27,215, a rise of just 0.1%.

Te Pati Maori co-leaders Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer. "I think that is so true," Ms Ngarewa-Packer said. It is a phrase Ms Ngarewa-Packer dislikes intensely, feeling that each side should come to the table in the interest of the strength of unity, as envisaged by the Treaty. Te Pati Maori is a challenge to the status quo, Ms Ngarewa-Packer said: when half the population was earning less than $30,000 (the median weekly income), that was not good enough. If Labour needed Te Pati Maori to form a government, it would need to offer plenty Ms Ngarewa-Packer said.

James K Baxter – the Ballard of Calvert StreetJesus last nights debate was mediocre. The first leaders debate that Jessica Mutch heroically attempted to keep relevant was dull and exceptionally boring. The debate was full of dull lifeless answers that peddled talking points rather than answers and vision. When you consider the radical shift to the right National and ACT represents, the biggest loser last night was New Zealand. Oh, BTW – our Post Leaders Debate live from Backbenchers Pub in Wellington was raucous, hilarious and once again a triumph for all involved.

But the sensible part of my brain says that this would be a very, very bad occurrence. There was the obligatory blowing of the racist Dog whistle and farcical claims about the Treaty of Waitangi. ACT would legislate that the principles of the Treaty are based on what the Treaty actually says, in contrast with recent revisionist interpretations of the Treaty’s principles, through a Treaty Principles Act and inviting citizens to ratify it. Its proposal, to hold a referendum on whether its misguided view of the meaning of the Treaty would be a farce. You really get the feeling that Act does not care about these potential consequences.
