While the dark days of New Zealand’s winters don’t hold a candle to Antarctica’s, there’s no doubt they can still affect our physical and mental health. In -45C conditions, the winter leader of Scott Base pans the camera about to show, well, not much. Combine this deficit with three years of pandemic-induced upheaval, the continuing cost of living crisis and a country already struggling with mental health, and we’re sitting ducks for a national downer. A team of abut 18 staff run the base during its six-month winter – almost half have worked in the defence force.

A huge reef there known locally as “cormorant island” now hosts thousands of cormorants that all rely on the large amount of carp in the water as they migrate to freshwater streams between April and July. #Qinghai Lake #cormorants CGTN YouTube ChannelGot a comment? Global News published this video item, entitled “Food inflation: More competition needed to tame high grocery prices in Canada, report argues” – below is their description. Governments must act to bring more grocers into the Canadian market, argues a new Competition Bureau report examining concentration in the sector. The investigation, which arose in response to surging inflation at the grocery store last fall, ties higher prices to a lack of competition in the Canadian grocery industry. The Competition Bureau’s investigation sought to find out to what extent high levels of concentration in Canada’s grocery industry was contributing to soaring levels of food inflation — a trend that continues to cause pain on Canadian household budgets. As Anne Gaviola explains, this comes in response to persistently high food inflation, impacting household budgets across the country.

I suspect Prime Minister Hipkins is at the realist end of the spectrum of engagement with China. We are not as reliant on China as we once were on the United Kingdom, but it’s getting up there. Prime Minister Hipkins will meet with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang while in Beijing, and will also attend a World Economic Forum event in Tianjin. The war in Ukraine is in some senses good for China: a Russia bled white by its own aggression will need China to lead Fortress Eurasia.

ANZ's economists expect house prices to rise slightly in the second half of this year. "We are forecasting house prices to lift just over 3% across the second half of the year," their latest Property Focus report says. "While there are still plenty of headwinds facing the housing market, we expect the tailwinds will blow a little more strongly across the second half of the year." "While high mortgage rates are certainly suppressing demand by sucking money out of debtors' pockets, household incomes have also grown strongly because of the tight labour market," the report says. "We now see the unemployment rate rising to 4.2% by the end of the year, rather than 4.4%," the report said.

Street names begin with “Rue”, the biennial French Festival draws crowds to the picturesque streets, a memorial to its first French settlers stands on the hill above the startling blue waters of the Banks Peninsula harbour. British settlers and, later, bach owners soon dominated the town, now with a population of around 750, but the French connection lingers on. This included higher rates of deaths and serious injuries than projected and fewer safety measures rolled out across the country than had been planned. Waka Kotahi set itself the goal of at least 500km of the network with reduced speeds by last June but it only managed to change 165km. It said there were six National Land Transport Programme projects off track at this point, with two unlikely to recover by June 30. Four NZ Upgrade Programme projects were also off track, with one unlikely to recover.
