Over the week police working on Operation Pakari executed 20 arrest warrants in Mataura, Gore, Invercargill, Dunedin and Hamilton. There was a pick up in activity at the latest auctions monitored by interest.co.nz, with more properties on offer and more selling under the hammer. Of those, 76 sold under the hammer giving an overall sales rate of 43%, compared to 40% the previous week. Similarly, the number of sales that achieved prices above or equal to their rating valuations increased slightly to 26%, up from 19% the previous week. The biggest improvement in the sales rate at the latest auctions was in Auckland, which had an overall sales rate of 51%, with only two districts - Rodney and Franklin - where the number of sales under the hammer failed to pass the halfway mark. Conversely, activity was unusually subdued in Canterbury where the sales rate was just 16%.

Southland’s first Arbor Day may have been the one held about June 14, 1886. Between 1892 and 1914 schools and Government departments observed Arbor Day, at various dates in winter and spring. Fortunately, the rope tied to a tree ashore held and the inflatable dinghies cushioned the yacht from impact with the rocks.

An Australian union says New Zealand-based cabin crew on some ultra-long haul Qantas flights are getting shorter rest breaks than crew flying out of Australia. New Zealand-based crew are staffing the new Qantas Auckland-New York non-stop flight and some other long-haul routes. He told the Herald it flies in the face of fatigue concerns around the appropriate rest cabin crew should be receiving. Flight attendants on the New York flight are mainly Kiwis and have two nights on the ground in New York after their flights which are in the air for about 16 hours. Unions in this country accused Air New Zealand of doing the same when it opened a base for cabin crew in Shanghai.

New Zealand Immigration and Protection Tribunal denied his appeal. The man was in Malaysia when he started a money lending business in 2003, taking money from investors and lending it out at a high interest rate. But in 2008, when business became rocky, he decided to borrow money from loan sharks and other lenders to keep afloat. New Zealand Immigration and Protection Tribunal found the man’s statements credible, but did not find any evidence that his life was under threat. New Zealand Immigration and Protection Tribunal denied his appeal.
