ISLAMABAD - India is denying hundreds of Afghan students studying in its universities an extension in their visas raising fears about their legal status in the host country. According to media reports, about 21,000 Afghan citizens had settled in India including 11,000 asylum seekers, but they were not included in the category of refugees. In the year 2022, India, despite knowing that hundreds of Afghan students were studying in its universities had rescinded their visas. Few days back, a large number of Afghan students had also staged a protest in New Delhi for extension of their stay and resumption of their studies. The students are neither getting scholarships nor permission to work in India, media reports further added.

ISLAMABAD, Sep 17 (APP): Special Assistant to Prime Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, Jawad Sohrab Malik on Sunday emphasized the importance of quality education and called it the most important for children. During meeting with principals of educational institutions of OPF, the Special Assistant termed the quality education a key to development of any nation. The purpose of the meeting was to improve the educational quality of OPF educational institutions. He suggested that measures should be taken to improve teaching methodology, focusing on technology transfer, and starting future-oriented programs. He said that all available resources will be utilized and other support to improve the quality of education in OPF schools.

Allowing a petition of an Afghan female Hazara soldier, who saved her life by fleeing to Pakistan after the Taliban takeover in neighbouring Afghanistan, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has declared that asylum-seeker “can’t be incarcerated as Pakistani law recognises the right to asylum”. The interior ministry recently said that action against foreigners residing illegally was being taken and 57 people have so far been arrested under the Foreigners Act of 1946 and transferred them to Adiala Jail. Finally, with the help of some intervention by The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Pakistan, she was bailed out by IHC and placed under the custody of the Secretary Interior and the supervision of the UNHCR. In its detailed judgment, the court has noted that there were no grounds left for prosecuting Azizi after her asylum application had been recognized by UNHCR. Gilani argued that in any case under Section 14(2) of the Foreigners Act, establishing criminal intent or mens rea through evidence must be considered a prerequisite.

SIALKOT - Deputy Commissioner Adnan Mehmood Awan has said that the construction of Airport Road has been completed at a cost of 817 million rupees. Trees will be planted in the green belts of the 7km long road from Sambrial Chowk to Sialkot Airport with the support of Sialkot Airport at a cost of 7 million rupees, while the District Council will hold tenders for the maintenance of streetlights. He stated this while addressing a delegation of local industrialists headed by Chairman Sialkot International Airport Limited (SIAL) Sohail Barlas. The DC said that the entry of dumpers would be banned on the newly constructed road and they would be given an alternative route. He said that the tendering process of the proposed project of 400 million rupees for revamping the Government Allama Iqbal Memorial Teaching Hospital (AIMTH) with 400 beds had been completed.

In a move that has sent shockwaves to the nation, the caretaker government pushed through another hike in the prices of petrol by Rs26.02 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs17.34 per litre. It added that the decision was taken owing to the increasing trend of petroleum prices in the international market. The price increase comes on the heels of an already massive hike on Sept 1, when the interim government raised fuel prices by up to Rs18 per litre. That jump in petroleum prices had come after similar hikes by the interim government on Aug 15. The price hike is based on existing tax rates and import parity prices, mainly because of currency fluctuation and a slight increase in international crude prices.
