COLOMBO (News 1st); The Presidential Commission of Inquiry (CoI) to investigate, inquire into and report or take necessary actions on findings of preceding Commissions or Committees appointed to investigate into human rights violations, serious violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and other such offences handed over its Interim Report to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The President in extraordinary gazettes issued on January 21st and February 12th, 2021 appointed members to the Commission of Inquiry (CoI)/Supreme Court Judge A. H. M. D. Nawaz is the Chairman of the Commission. Retired Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando and retired District Secretary Nimal Abeysiri are the other members. The Commission, which has paid special attention to the Provisions 9, 11 and 13 of the PTA, has made three key recommendations in its interim report with regard to the implementation of the PTA in a more democratic manner. The Commission, in its Interim Report, proposes the importance of establishing an Advisory Board consisting of not less than three persons representing all ethnic groups, to advise the President or the Minister in charge of Defence under article 13 of the PTA.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in the country thus far to 289,153. Presently 21,525 infected patients are being treated at hospitals and treatment centers across the island. Meanwhile, the number of total recoveries has reached 263,758.

The Hambantota International Port (HIP) recorded their highest discharge levels of bulk cargo recently, when a shipment of gypsum consigned to Insee Cement was unloaded at a rate of 24,000 Metric tons per day by port operations. Thusith Gunawarnasuriya, Director Procurement & Logistics of Insee Cement says this was an extraordinary achievement for a Sri Lankan port in terms of speed and efficiency. But once these vessels arrive in the country, it is up to port operations, in this case HIPG and HIPS, to discharge the vessels quickly. He says the almost doubled productivity coupled with excellent service levels is nothing short of remarkable. Sri Lanka is expecting another batch of Sinopharm vaccines, says the State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals. Accordingly, 2 million more doses of the China-manufactured coronavirus jabs will arrive in the country in the early hours of Thursday (July 22) the Prof. Channa Jayasumana said. This will bring the total number of Sinopharm vaccines received by the island nation to 9.1 million. Speaking further in this regard, the state minister said 400,000 of these vaccines will be rolled out in the Kurunegala District. The remaining vaccines will be administered as follows:• Galle District - 275,000• Matara, Badulla and Ratnapura districts - 200,000 each• Puttalam, Polonnaruwa, Monaragala, Nuwara-Eliya, Ampara and Batticaloa districts - 100,000 each• Hambantota District - 125,000

Sri Lanka’s first floating solar power plant is planned to be built in Diyawanna Lake with the assistance of a loan from the Government of India. The floating solar power plant, which is proposed to be constructed to meet the daily electricity requirement of the Parliament premises, has a capacity of 1.5 MW. Minister of Power Dullas Alahapperuma stated that a preliminary feasibility study is currently underway. The Minister further stated that the construction of the power plant will be expedited and the Parliament will set a precedent for the entire country regarding the concept of floating solar power plants. The Minister said that feasibility studies will be conducted by the Ceylon Electricity Board on the relevant reservoirs and the reservoirs with the maximum capacity will be selected.

While Google was busy beta testing Android 12 for its Pixels for the past few months, Asus has been doing the same thing for last year's ROG Phone 3 - only with Android 11. Asus has put out a new firmware update file on its website which takes the ROG Phone 3 from Android 10 to Android 11, finally. However, there's one huge caveat - this is only intended for handsets sold on the Taiwanese market. It brings with it everything you'd expect from an Android 11 update, and on top of that there's a new ZenUI design with revamped built-in apps. Maybe it can do that before Google releases Android 12?
